Surface Modelling - Shelling Error

Hi,

So my problem is this...

I get an error which states 'the attempted shell has non-manifold inputs. Try with manifold inputs'. This error occurs when I try to shell an ellipse tube that has two waves in it. (Think of a wavey door handle). What is a manifold input? And how can I begin to resolve my problem?
