Hello, I am a beginner in stress simulation. I have a simple structure of two 6"x2" tubing and would like to determine the amount of load it can withstand.

 

The stress is concentrating at the joints and corners, as it should, and is exceeding the yield strength. However the stress on the rest of the beam is extremely low stress in comparison and there is very little deflection.

 

Should I interpret this as meaning the entire structure will fail? Or am I okay to probe the surfaces of the beam and use that as my maximum stress values. I think this would assume some deformation happens at these small areas but the rest of the structure still supports the load

I understand that Nastran would be best but I don't have access and this is just a quick experiment.

High stress in very very limited area might be normal and ignored, or might be an issue.

For example, you would expect the torus edge of the lug to round off the circular edge (material yield) of this hole - but not an issue.

BTW - there should be no difference in results between Inventor and Nastran for this analysis.
