STEP file import and save issue

Hello,

I am having an issue with a vendor STEP file. After the file is imported into Inventor the program locks up when trying to save.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have attached the STEP file from the vendors download center.

Thanks,

Mike,

The issue is not in opening up the file. The issue is when I save the model the program becomes unresponsive.

Thank you for the reply.

I saved it twice ... once as an assembly with A LOT of assemblies in it ...

then

I did it again as an IPT.

Are you saving it locally ..or to a network location?    What version of inventor? Also do you have all of the patches...

The other thing I would add to mdavis22569 posting...   Do you ever see the Save dialog?  Just wondering if the dialog is off the screen...

Mike,

I am saving it to a local drive. I am using Inventor 2016 included in the Product Design Suite. I am not sure of the patches. Is there a place this information is readily available?

Mark,

I am seeing the dialog. The issue begins after I click save.

Thanks for the reply.

Can you try saving it to a different location?

In my first attempt it did not save (or not within a reasonable time).

I then saw that it had a bunch of sub-assemblies, most with only one part.

I then promoted all of the parts to the top level assembly and deleted all of the sub assemblies.

Then I ran Repair on all of the parts.

Mike,

I tried changing the file location in the import dialog box to folder on my desktop.

This resulted in the same unresponsiveness.

I also created a project in a folder on my desktop and tried importing and saving while that project was activated.

This also resulted in the same unresponsiveness.

Regarding the service packs, is there a way to see what service packs are installed inside Inventor?

Im wondering if your Inventor is not properly registered..  DO the following:

1.  Exit Inventor

2.  Click the WIndows start button and type CMD in the search field but do not hit an enter.

3.  When CMD.exe appears in the list, right mouse click on it and select Run as Administrator.

4.  In the command prompt, navigate to C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor <version\Bin

5.  Type Inventor /install.

6.  Wait a few minutes and then restart Inventor and test your workflow again.

go to your about Inventor in the right corner

Capture.JPG

or go to control panel ... programs, installed updates on the left side and scroll to inventor and see what ones are installed.

What if you get another step file of something else, do you have an issue then too?

Mark,

That very well could be the issue, as we just began using the Product Design Suite. I will have to direct this issue to IT, as I do not have administrator privileges.

Would this cause issues all the time, or intermittently? I only ask because I've imported many models prior to this particular model with out issues.

JD,

This worked for me as well. However, the way I did it seemed tedious. Unless there is a way to select all parts at once to promote, this would be undesirable.

You need to do your updates

I believe you should be at Build 210 once you have them all installed.

Well, rather than Component>Promote you can simply drag and drop from sub to main assembly.

But you do have to drag each part individually.

JD,

I will keep this method in mind for when I need to move components into the top-level. Any suggestions on moving a large number of parts more efficiently?
