Sort parts List based on Part Number

Since yesterday afternoon I've been having sporadic issues with sorting the BOM by part number from within the assembly. It started shortly after we had a power cut, but I don't know if that could have caused it. The only other change to my PC yesterday was the update for Inventor Pro 2019.1.2.

The workflow is;

Open the assembly.

Open the BOM. Change to Parts Only Tab

Remove any unwanted columns (dragging to the runtime column customisation pop up list) if necessary. - Not always the case.

Click on the A-Z sort button at the top

Change the top option to Part Number

At this point I get an error message saying "Encountered an improper arguement". I click OK. (There is no other option)

The error message goes but leaves the sort window open. If I click OK to sort I get an "Unhandled Exception..." error message.

I've attached screen grabs of the error messages. I've also attached a word document. I copied the details from the Unhandled Exception message into Word in case it can shed any light on the problem.

If I click Continue on the last error message, the message disappears, leaving me with the BOM window still open but completely greyed out. If I close it, I go back to the assembly.  But I can repeat this over and over and with several assemblies.

Yesterday I closed Inventor and restarted it and then it was ok. Today that makes no difference. I asked a colleague to try his machine. His was fine. No problems.

Anyone else experiencing this or can re-create this? Does anyone have any suggestions where to look to try to rectify this. Is it likely I'll have to repair from the installation files?

Many thanks

Steve

sounds something wrong for your 2019.1.2 installation, would you mind try to uninstall it and reinstall?

Thanks!

Hi Xun,

After uninstalling the update, before re-installing, the problem was still there.

After re-installing the update, the problem is still there too.

I wondered if the assemblies I'd tried initially had been open together in a higher level iam when we had the power cut. I thought maybe it could have corrupted the files somehow. However, I've just tried two assemblies that I definitely didn't have open. In one assembly I had no problems. In the other it can up again. The only difference between the assemblies in terms of my work flow, was that I removed a column from the one that errored. Initially I didn't think that was connected but maybe it is. I'll continue to test assemblies, time permitting and report back.

If you have any other suggestions, please let me know.

I've just tried a pair of assemblies that use the same parts. They are left and right handed versions of the same thing. In one assembly I sorted without removing columns, without error. In the other assembly I removed a column but the sort still worked, without error, so the column customisation is not consistent, so can't be the cause.

Hi! Steve,

The behavior does not sound right to me. Could you share the files with me directly ([email protected])? If you already share with us, please let me know who I should contact.

Thanks again!

Hello @steve_lindley,

Like Johnson said, please share a set of sample (simple) data to us.

Thank you and wish we can make it out soon.

@johnsonshiueI don't believe this is an issue with the dataset, as my colleagues don't have this problem when looking at the same models.  Also, as I've said, it can be sporadic, in that if I tried the sort function in assemblies that haven't been opened in months, sometimes I see the issue and sometimes I don't.

Unfortunately, I don't have the need to be exporting BOMs again at the moment, so I'll have to leave the issue until it rears it's head again. If it does, I shall try a repair on the install I think.

Many thanks for your help though.
