Snap dimension problems

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi everyone,

I an running Inventor 2019 and I want to place dimensions to my drawing but I can't snap in too many cases lines or endpoints It doesn't highlight what I want to select, I tried to zoom in closer or zoom out but nothing. I have been looking for grid snap off, resolution, snap options with the RBM, endpoint, quad, center mid, etc but nothing comes out what I want to select. I tried to select the bottom of a plate, bottom of an angle and nothing. I got some dimensions in but I am missing a lot of dimensions that I need to place.

Please help I need to finish my work and I am behind just for this dimensioning issue.

Thanks

What is your selection filter set to? Is it edge priority, or something else?

Is it possible that some of the filters are unchecked as I show below?

hi Scott McFadden,

Nope all filters are checked.

And I tried different selection filters edg, parts Priorities, etc, and nothing seems to help me to select what I want.

Hi Samuel,

You only attached the idw file without the iam and ipt files. The pink dimensions usually mean the association between the dimension the the component geometry has been lost. As a result, you cannot add new dimensions.

Based on the files you sent me, you are designing industrial equipment, which is exactly what Inventor is targeting. But, it seems that you run into quite a few issues. I have to ask what design tools did you use. Have you got any training on using 3D true-scaled feature-base parametric solid modeler like Inventor or its competitors?

Many thanks!

Hi Johnson,

You are not right in your assumption in what I am missing, If I zoom out like I am attaching the snapshot then it highlights what I want otherwise, it won't do it.

Next to the bottom left section, there are two good dimensions that I placed only zooming out that far. But I will need a magnifying glass to be able to see what I want.

I also sent the link for the files, but you didn't see it.

Please see the snapshot I am attaching.

Hi Samuel,

Please look at the links you provided in post#8 and #9. There is only one idw file and nothing else. It is not enough for me to tell where the problem is. On the last reply, you did provide a zip file. I will take a look at it tomorrow morning.

Many thanks!

Sorry, Johnson,

Are you reading the post 11 for the file I am sharing at the google drive? is 146MB?

But like I said before the dimensioning only work if I zoom out far away, that the only way I found is working to give me the option for the different edges otherwise in a full view it doesn't show the scroll selection options for different "Edges"

Please the snapshots

Hi Samuel,

I think we are running in a circle now. The file you attached to Google drive still misses quite a few CC parts. When I open the drawing, it prompts me to find those CC parts. Please share the complete dataset.

Many thanks!

Hi Johnson,

I think you are missing the point, I have problem to select the elements, only when I zoom out far away is when I can select the edge option for different parts, I open another view (2) within the closer area I need to dimension, I hover something in view 1 (the area is far away) and identify the edge I want to dimension by looking view 2. Then I can place the dimension. This is my workaround solution, no missing parts like you said. no problem with the filters, no problems with snap settings. It got to be something wrong with Inventor 2019, I didn't have this issue in 2018. I have worked with AutoCAD, Microstation, Intergraph, Tekla and the snap option for Inventor is not quite good in Drawings. I think you guys have more room to improve it.

In regards of what is missing "cc" I don't understand what do you mean?

Can you be more specific. I've tried to load the file and share it, and it's working for me.

Thank you for the effort and time but I need to finish this drawing that has taking me 4 times more than before with other options.

Regards,

Sam

Johnson,

Please see the attached dwg that I finish by doing the workaround I mentioned before.

I have the opposite issue, whenever attempting to drag a dimension out of a drawn part it try to infer every snap point meaning its almost impossible to rapidly click the line then click again to place dimension as seen in the attached video.

is there a option to momentarily not infer dimension snaps

@FLETCHER.A

The original question was about drawing dimensions.

Your question is about part sketch dimensions.

In your case I would toggle the visibility of the Derived assembly to make working with the sketch easier.
