Sketch Block at Assembly Level

Hello,

I don't see the option to create a sketch block at the assembly level.

I have a repetitive hole pattern made from a template that I want to show and make holes from, at the assembly level.

I want to be able to show it on the assembly dwgs also, so I thought a sketch block would be a good way to handle it.

It's basically a rectangle with holes in each corner and the centerline of each short edge, and it spans across multiple members of a welded assy.

Also, if possible, I'd like to be able to edit the block and have it update across multiple assemblies. If I have to change it once per assembly I'm okay with that too.

Can you guys recommend efficient ways of doing this?

Thanks,

Ben

My best recommendation is to create a part with a parametric sketch with or without any actual sketch features and then link this to the assembly drawing.  If the parametric sketch does actually have a sketch, you can use a common origin with your assembly model so it shows up in your assembly sketch.  This sketch entities will not be linked to the assembly sketch associatively but if you use the linked part sketch parameters in the placement and dimensioning of the assembly sketch, the sketch will update when the parametric part sketch is updated.

I have attached a screen shot of the place where you would add the parametric part link and of the application results of the linking.

Ben,

If you create a plane at the location you want the holes, you can RC on the plane in the Model tree and create a new sketch as shown below.

I think the question is:

Why aren't blocks available in Assembly Sketches?

The process of creating parts with sketches just to link them to the assembly is just a waste of time...

Hi! This is a very interesting question. I agree with you that sketch blocks should be available in assembly sketch. The reason why it is not yet available is probably due to the concept of Layout workflow to begin with. Inventor Sketch Blocks was designed to support 2D Layout workflow, meaning you create sketch blocks as 2D components. Then you push individual blocks into individual parts in an assembly. You can use the sketch and sketch blocks to drive the assembly.

Assembly sketch is mainly for machining purpose, which is not in scope for Layout workflows. But, I do understand that sketch blocks can be leveraged without having anything to do with Layout workflows. It is a very powerful tool to reuse sketch geometry and reduce sketch cluttering.

Please feel free to submit it to Inventor Ideas forum or vote for any existing ones.

Many thanks!

Hello Johnson,

I'm impressed by the speed of your response.  Kudos to you!

The sketch and blocks could also be used to constrain the parts in the assembly which at the moment seems to be impossible.

This way you could try moving around parts constrained to parts that have not yet been modeled.

What do you think?

Hi! I do agree that Sketch Blocks will be useful in assembly sketch. But, I don't think it should be leverage as Layout workflow as Sketch Blocks in part sketch.

Many thanks!
