sheet metal thickness in IDW Template

Found this on a post from 2007:

1 - Open your sheet metal template, click on the parameters button, and check the option to export the Thickness parameter as a custom iproperty

2 (optional) - Check the iproperties of your sheet metal part file and verify the Thickness was added to the Custom tab.

3 - Open your drawing template, go to iproperties dialog, custom tab and add Thickness as a custom TEXT property

4 - In your drawing template, go to Tools > Document Settings > Drawing tab, check the Copy Mode Properties option. Then click on the Properties button and choose the Thickness property in the secondary dialog.

5 - Edit your drawing title block(s) and add the thickness reference by selecting Custom Properties - Drawing Type.

Works great just one problem.

If I change the thickness of my sheet metal part after the views are inserted to my IDW the thickness won't update in the drawing.

Add a custom text iproperty to your .ipt template and make it equal to =<SHEET METAL RULE>

This has to be in square brackets and a function symbol will appear after you add it.

In your .idw template add this custom iproperty to your title and then this will be populated with the name of the Sheet Metal Rule from the .ipt

When I placed the views the thickness was 3mm and that's OK.

Then I changed the thickness to 2mm but the note in the drawing didn't update.

If I delete the drawing views and insert them again and then insert the note, the thickness in the note will be OK - 2mm.

Mike

Thank you very much but - this can be done only after inserting a view in the IDW drawing.

What I meen is to do this in the IDW Template so it will work for all my drawings.

The problem is that in the IDW Template I don't have the Custom Properties - Model to choose.

Is there a way to do this with the Template? (The thickness in the note will change if I change the IPT thickness)

Thanks again

Alon

Rob,

Thanks and sorry for not responding

Yes I did but I had the same problem. Maybe I did somthing wrong but it worked only for the first time I inserted the view and did not update after changing the thickness.

Thanks

Hi Alon,

Are you altering the thickness by picking another Sheet Metal Style? And do you have the "Use Thickness from Rule" ticked under Sheet Metal Defaults? You shouldn't really just alter the Thickness parameter in the Parameters dialog box as the BendRadius etc are all tied in with the sheet thickness under the Sheet Metal Styles.

The "Use Thickness from Rule" is ticked.

I'm changing the Thickness in the "Sheet Metal Defaults".

It shouldn't matter to all Parameters like "BendRadius" because they all use the Thickness Parameter and change according to it.

Hi Alon,

With the 2 files I uploaded, if you open them both and then go into the .ipt and select another Sheet Metal Style the name of that style will then appear in the title block in the .idw. I just downloaded and checked them again to make sure.

OK I see - this works for the specific drawing.

I'm trying to set a Default IDW Template to do this on every drawing.

The problem is that in the IDW Template I don't have the "Custom Properties - Model" to choose

Hi Alon,

In the .ipt Right Mouse Button on Sheetmetal.ipt and select iProperties, go to the Custom Tab and add a new one (called whatever you want) and for the value type in

=<SHEET METAL RULE>

Then back in the .idw this should then be available to add into the Title block.

This works for the drawing after a view is inserted.

It does not work for a IDW Template  (if I change the thickness it doesn't update).

In the IDW Template the only option is "Custom Properties - Drawing"

and not "Custom Properties - Model" which you use after inserting a view.

Did you go through the steps I described in my post? As this works fine for me.

Hi Alon,

If you save that .idw as a template it will work - I have a SheetMetal.idw template for exactly that reason. If the custom iproperty exists in the .ipt it will be picked up in the new .idw created from the template. You will need to place a view initially in the template to populate the Custom Propertys but you can then delete the view and save the template - I'm guessing that is the bit you need.

Confused ...The note does change if you change the thickness.

I guess I'm confused on exactly what you want.

Are you trying to go to custom iproperty in the IDW and change the thickness?  Or the note?

If so it's not possible .. it won't go back to the model and change it.    I ones I uploaded you change the thickness in the IPT, and it will update the note in the IDW and the thickness iproperty.
