Why I can not make a normal cut on this part?

Hello eng.co,

Please check off the "Cut Normal" option and set "All" as Extents.

Also refer the HELP here please.

Hello,

I don't think cut normal is required in your case because there is no bend feature at all, cut normal usually means cut across bend with the fixed normal direction, that's why it fails. Just simply check off cut normal option here and you can get the result then.

Thanks!

If I check off cut normal option the flat pattern is not OK. I have two edges instead one. That is not what I want.

OK, Cut normal means to orientate the sketch profile to the normal of cross surface. In the case you've provide, it will fail in the middle of line that the sketch profile can't be 90 degree rotate to cut the shape, this is the reason. back to your problem, I am still thinking how to deal with.

Will update you once find something.

Thanks!

I don't have 2019 installed at work, so i couldn't use your dimension.

But looking at your screenshot, you're already using surface features and thicken to create your shape...

Why not use that for the entire shape instead of using cut normal?

See attached example.

Not exactly sure why it fails, but it fails the same way in 2018 and 2019.  The problem is the surfaces and using the "thicken" command.  You can do it like S_May has shown (he basically deleted the thickened face, did the cut then thickened again) or you can use extrude to get the first shape rather than extrude surface and thicken.

Hi! This is a bug. Cut normal should work. Cut normal fails possibly due to the Unfold/Refold failure during the cut process or the Boolean failure. It is unclear to me where the problem is. I will work with the project team to understand the behavior better.

There are usually two workarounds in this kind of case but only one workaround works here. To create the correct geometry, you can uncheck Cut Normal. Then use Thicken -> uncheck Automatic Blending -> Intersect -> select the inner face Ok. In other cases, you may need to repeat the process from outside face too. But, this case, only thickening from inside face is needed.

Many thanks!

Hi Johnson,

I just saw that the problem is with the gap value of the rip.

In my part, the gap value is 1mm and with 1mm cut normal is not possible. If I use gap value >1,016mm or <0.718mm that cut normal is possible.

This is strange!
