Hey Guys, 

 

First time posting on this forum, I have searched through existing posts which have helped to an extent however I'm still looking for a way to solve this issue. 

 

I have attached a quick part file I did to demonstrate what I'm trying to achieve. I did three separate corners, the contour flange that follows two edges in one feature is what I'm aiming for however the automatic miter doesn't work when performing it over the two separate bodies.

 

The second corner is an attempted corner seam which seems to work fine apart from the last section of the flange as it doesn't seem I can select all edges at once. (Not sure if this is an appropriate method). I thought maybe the relief cutouts were preventing it so I cut the excess material away, still little success. 

 

The third corner I manually cut the 45 degree miter corners, I believe there is overlapping material, so I might have need to cut away more material/ leave a miter gap for welding.

 

I hope that makes sense and you guys understand what I'm trying to achieve, any help would be appreciated. I'm open to alternative ideas that I may not be aware of!!!

Thank you so much for your reply, I wasn’t able to open the .ipt file you modified because it seems I have an older version of inventor, I tried updating to the latest patch but it would still not open.

 

I think I could figure out what you did from the screenshots anyway. From what I can see it looks you got it to work using all one body, which is fine, but I’m trying to achieve a miter using a flange of this nature between two individual bodies that can be individually flat patterned at a later stage.

 

The reason for this is sometimes a large tool box for example won’t be able to be folded in one go, you will need a few different pieces each with a mitered flange profile to be welded together. So I’m trying to figure out the best way to go about this.

 

I have attached the file again doing what you did, you will see it works on the same body fine but I get an error trying to connect the last bit of the corner seam on the two different bodies.

I think the simplest thing would be to start your model as one body, then split it into two after the miter operation is done.

please take a close look at it to understand
then you can easily do it yourself

Hi @S_May

I have only just found the time to go through your files, thank you so much for your help, I completely understand what you did and would never had thought of doing it that way!

 

I also tried what @SBix26 had suggested, modelling as one body and then splitting after the operation, again something so simple can’t believe it didn’t occur to me haha, sometimes the simplest things need to be pointed out, now I have two more sheet metal methods at my disposal Smiley Happy
