Rip a cylinder

Hi all

I have made a lofted Sheetmetal tube using lofted flange, die formed with an assigned thickness of .188. Now I am trying to rip it. I can pick the face easy enough, the outer face but then I have to pick a point.  No points are showing up.

Hi! On the circular edge of a full cylinder, the only vertex is the center point. You will need to create a sketch point or a workpoint on the edge. The quickest way is to use Workpoint command -> pick an origin plane -> pick the circular edge. After you create the point, you can select it to rip.

Many thanks!

That did it, thank you.

Why isn't this in the help on ripping? You are in quality and between many of the cad, cam and erp systems out there Autodesk has one of the least complete poorest quality help sections for a major software company.  Honestly for something so simple I should not have had to have take the time to come here and hope some one answers to learn that little tidbit of vital information required to rip a sheet metal cylinder. It should have been right there on the help page about doing a rip. The instructions say to use a "Rip Point". To find out what a Rip Point is I typed Rip Point in search. Guess what came up? The same page of instructions that said to use a Rip Point in the first place. Nothing on how to add or make a Rip Point. Are you getting what I am upset about? To use a feature in some software that cost thousands of dollars I have to rely on the good will of strangers instead of using that software's help. I would be looking for other employment if I did such incomplete poor quality work and were so downright lazy and sloppy. To make a customer go to a forum for help instead of having a competent complete help section is poor form and reflects badly on Autodesk. How about you pass this on to the C level manager over the help pages. It might do them some good to get a little customer feed back.

Hi Scott,

I understand your frustration. I can relate to that. If I were a beginner, I would have stumbled on this one too. There is definitely room for improvement in terms of the workflow and how it is documented. The product itself also has room for improvement.

To certain degree, the forum is indeed an attempt to answer questions like this particular one. There are just way too many workflows and options to document. Even if it was documented, I believe the questions would still be asked. I have seen that happening quite frequently. This is why we have Expert Elites and Autodesk employees like me reviewing forum threads regularly.

I will work with our project team and see how we can further improve the workflow and documentation in this case. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to visit the forum or simply Google a related question. More often than not, you will find a solution.

Many thanks!
