Right mouse click menu selects on release

I am having an insanely annoying issue since upgrading to Inventor 2021. If the right mouse button is held and released with the pointer over a right mouse menu option, it automatically selects the option. This is like the marking menu behavior, but it is getting applied to the right mouse menu options as well. It happens even if I disable the marking menu.

The problem is, if I move the mouse pointer at all while clicking the right mouse button to bring up the menu, Inventor auto selects whatever option the pointer was on. So part visibility changes, or commands are undone, or commands are repeated, etc.

I don't remember this happening in Inventor 2016.

I use a trackball and my muscle memory automatically starts moving the pointer in the direction of the intended option of the right click menu while I am clicking the button. My only work around right now is to very carefully not move the mouse while clicking the right button. No other software behaves like this.

Anyone else experiencing this issue or have suggestions to fix it?

Hi! I could be wrong but I am not aware of a behavioral change here. I suspect this could be related to Win10 Mouse Settings. Go to Mouse Properties -> Button -> ClickLock -> uncheck "Turn on ClickLock."

Does it work better now?

Many thanks!

Hi Johnson. Thanks for the suggestion. I just check and click lock was not enabled. Additionally, I only observe this behavior with Inventor. So I don't think it is a Windows level setting.

@Coffee_CAD ,

I'm very sorry about this. We met the very similar issue before in 2018.1 and fixed it in 2018.2. But looks there is issue again. Do you have other AutoCAD software (such as AutoCAD) on your machine? It maybe component issue. Could you please help try if yes?

Inventor: Context menu or marking menu vanishes again when using right mouse button very fast/short ...

@JarFu, That does look like a very similar issue from 2018. I do have AutoCAD 2021 installed and have not noticed the same issue that I have with Inventor. I just tried again and cannot reproduce the behavior in AutoCAD. Thanks.

Thanks for the additional testing and quick update! I'm checking with dev team to see if there is any clue about the problem. We will let you know once there is any update.

I didn't know this behavior existed, but i think another workaround could be to "go with it" and just hold down the right mouse button and release on the option you need.

What i'm wondering about this suggestion is how manageable that is with a trackball, i'm using a wacom pen myself so i have no clue.

I actually think the behavior can be nice, as i sometimes right-click and hold just too long which accidentally activates a marking menu option.... Now i know i can just keep my right-button pressed and select what i need.

So, at least, thank you for that. 😉

Hi @Coffee_CAD ,

You're correct about the workaround 😂 "carefully not move the mouse while clicking the right button".

With Inventor 2020 and previous releases, if turn off marking menu, right click menu does not popup till we release the mouse. Since 2021, the legacy menu was also converted to a marking menu but without the radial menu items. This makes it the same behavior whether marking menu is disable or not: the menu item under the mouse cursor will be executed when mouse released.

@-niels-  I agree the best long term solution may be to adapt to the new functionality. It will just be a hard habit to break/start since all other software does not behave this way.

@JarFuThanks for doing the research. I knew something had changed with Inventor 2021. The change in 2021 to make the legacy menu into the same functionality as the marking menu explains the behavior.

It would be nice if the devs can make it so that a single press and release of the right mouse button brings up the right click menu for viewing without unintentionally selecting a random command. It feels like the response is just a little too fast.

I think part of the problem is the timing.  It may be that adding a very short delay (maybe a few hundred ms) would avoid the issue of accidentally selecting an option when trying to use the normal right click menu workflow.

Have there been any developments on this since - I find myself constantly having parts delete themselves due to this behaviour. Is it present in 2022/2023?
