Problem editing/deleting faces from 3rd party file

Hi, I recieved a big 3d file from one of our suppliers of a drill tower and I need to make small adjustments to the model.

They dont want to give me the full detailed file, so they compress most of it to one big body.

I have tried using the "Direct edit" function with various luck. afterwards I got away with deleting faces where the direct edit didn't work.
Suddenly it wont accept deleting any more faces. What can cause this?

See image for error message when trying to delete some faces. (already deleted alot sucessfully in the same file)

Let me know If theres some basic info I should add, Im fairly new to inventor as I have previously used SW.

Do you want this as an assembly or do you want this as multi-body solid?

Are you using Delete Face

or

are you using Delete Face with Heal

or

Are you using Delete Face with Lump or Void?

(It is unusual for a beginner to use Delete Face.)

Can you Attach your *.ipt file here with what you have so far?

Hi @oeVUCYH

The delete face operation could have failed because the modeler may have encountered some geometric complexities which may have resulted in the error. It's hard to say what the error could be unless we look at the model. I understand its a very big model.

From what you are stating, the file translates as a single multi-solid body with 112 bodies. Some possible suggestions/workarounds are

1. Isolate that single body which causes the delete face issue, delete the body and recreate it.

2. You could try deleting some other adjancent geometry, maybe that might help.

3. Try Repair Bodies command (rmb click on the body in the browser and click on Repair Bodies)

This will take you into the repair environment

Hi! It is possible the geometry was bad to begin with or Inventor simply cannot delete the selected geometry due to a bug. Without seeing the file, it is impossible to tell. Please share the files with me directly johnson.shiue@autodesk.com

I would prefer to have it as an assembly, but I dont think that it is possible to just convert it. yes the part is a multi body part, but 95% of the different parts are still merget into one body, and it is this body I want to delete certain parts of.

I am unfortunately not allowed to share the part on here.

I have tried using both Delete face with and without heal. If i try to use lump or void it will select the whole body, which is not what I want.

The main part of the assembly that I am interested in using is all merged into one big body. all the other bodies comes mostly from various nuts and bolts.

So I cant delete the body I have trouble editing and simply recreate it as it would take me days or even weeks to completely recreate it.

I have also tried deleting other geometries around where I face the problem, but when I first got the error stated I am no longer able to delete any faces.

I tried using the repair body command, but I cant get it to repair the part after I have deleted the faces. it rolls back in the history tree until no faces are deleted. I could not find a way to fix the problem with "repair body" either.

Do you have subscription to the manufacturing collection?  If you do, try processing your file in fusion 360.  Put it in direct editing mode and you can select faces and just use the delete key to delete faces.  There is a chance it may succeed in places inventor does not.

Hi Øyvind,

Many thanks for sharing the file with me! I am taking a look and see if I can remove the desirable faces. I will reply to you in an email. Also, I will share the information here without specifying your design.

Thanks again!

Hi Øyvind,

This is doable, though the process is tedious. Before starting Delete Face command, I actually created two Split features to focus on the section of interest. After the faces were deleted and healed, the two Split features were deleted.

Many thanks!
