Patterning a only a rectangular perimeter

I'm building a skeleton frame for use with frame generator and ran into a problem. On the product I'm designing, there are 2 different column lengths. A longer column at the perimeter and a shorter column at all interior locations. I'm driving column locations off of a rectangular pattern sketch.

Is there an effective way to pattern the perimeter columns so that they will automatically adjust to additional column locations in either direction? In the past, I've just supressed undesired instances but I know there must be a better way.

If I am understanding you right, I would do this in three patterns as detailed in my image. Two for your exterior columns in either direction and one for your interior columns in both directions.
