Opening a DWG in Inventor, everything is multiplied by 25.4mm

Hello!

 

We use metric system. I have a large DWG I have to make some 3D models of. The dimensions are shown properly in the DWG file when opened in Autocad, but when I open the file in Inventor, the measured value is always multiplied by 25.4mm (1 inch). However, when I copy the geometry using Ctrl+C and paste it into a sketch, the dimensions are now shown properly.

 

How do I fix this?

1. Are you sure about that statement?  Dimensions have two components, magnitude and units.

Run the -dwgunits (with the preceding - sign just as shown) in AutoCAD.

Read the command line - what units does AutoCAD report.

 

2. Follow the command line in AutoCAD with the -dwgunits command.

- Unit for length: 3 (millimeters)

- Linear display format: 2

- Linear display precision: 4

- Scale objects from other drawings upon insert: No

- Match INSUNITS to drawing units: Yes

 

Still, when I measure a line in acad, it says 115, but in Inventor it says 2921 mm.

The only working solution I found was to use dual units and read the given inch value as millimeters. It's less burdensome than to keep the file open in both Autocad for measuring and Inventor for copy-pasteing and constantly see "File changed outside" nags and hundreds of severity errors...

It sounds to me like you are doing wayyy too much work.

What units is your Inventor file before you import the AutoCAD?

It sounds like you prefer to work in inch units rather than mm.

It sounds like the simple solution might be to start from a mm template (or open the AutoCAD directly) and then change the Inventor units to Inches.

Document Settings>Units

This will convert correctly.

I can't share the file (top secret ;), but there is obviously something wrong with it. New documents created by me in ACAD have the units set up properly and show properly in Inventor. Well, I have to tell the drafter to set up his units properly the next time!

Make sure you emphasize -dwgunits.  The -dwgunits and the units commands in AutoCAD are two entirely different commands.
