Nesting Utility Parts Left

Greetings,

Working with the nesting utility, I generate a nest and sometimes the nest leaves some parts out of the general nesting and I see in the report at the bottom some text that says: "Parts left information" and shows me some parts that aren't in the nesting. Why those parts are not in the nesting if the parts have the dimensions to fit in the nest and why there aren't notifications for parts left out of the nesting?

Hello @javizloco,

The only cases in which something like this should happen, where one or more parts does not fit on a nest, would be if 1) the part is physically too big to fit on the packaging being used or 2) not enough packaging are available to fit all of the parts.

In case 1), you should see a warning message on the node like this:  2018-08-21 14_39_42-Autodesk Inventor Professional 2019.png and if you hover on that node, you'll see a warning message detailing which parts could not fit on the nest. You'll also see information at the bottom of the report detailing which parts and how many of each part could not fit on the nest.

In case 2), you will not see a warning. In this case, there is a limited number of sheets available and nesting produces as many sheets as you have available packaging. If you do not have enough packaging available to nest all of the parts, it simply doesn't nest those parts and they are detailed at the bottom of the report. We do not consider this a warning at this time because it's not necessarily an "unexpected result" because you have constrained the number of sheets deliberately.

If this is something you would like different behavior on, or if neither of these scenarios apply to your particular situation, please provide the files that can demonstrate the issue so we can investigate whether there is a bug.

I reviewed the files and found that the files left out are parts with 1215mm and the packaging is 1220mm, but the trim is 10mm, so the part doesn't fit. But there's no notification from the software that the part doesn't fit, it just leaves those parts out of the nesting. I'd say that the bug is that there's no notification if the part fits in the packaging but no with that trim.

Could it be that you have "Display nest calculation warning and error prompts" accidentally turned off?

This happens when you click on the "Do not show message again" button.

You can restore the  messages by checking that checkbox again in the Options.
Also note that even though the error message is suppressed, the warning icon in the browser is still present and hovering over the warning will tell you why the part was not included.

There's no pop-up and the notifications are on, and the icon alert doesn't show either.

Could we get a copy of your files to have a look at?

Hi @javizloco,

I can't find out the problem from this screenshot. Could you provide me your .inest file together with the source parts so that I can verify for you? My email is: forrest.shi@autodesk.com. And which version you are working on, 2019 or 2019.1 Update?

Thanks,

Forrest

I have encountered a situation similar to this where I cannot nest a part which is 48x61.75 on a 48x120 sheet.

If I change the sheet size to be 48.02 then it will nest OK.

I've turned all my available options to 0.00 which should allow for full width utilization but it will still not allow the part to nest.

Hi David,

We've logged a ticket and currently the development team is working on that. Will keep you updated once it gets resolved. Thanks!

Is there any way to nest parts that are enabled only in a level of detail?

Hello @javizloco,

Since Inventor BOM does not detect Level of Detail (but always refers to Master), it is not possible to suppress certain parts and prevent them from being extracted for nesting.

The next best way to achieve the same result is to set BOM quantity to 0. Right now when user overrides the BOM QTY on a part in the Inventor assembly to 0, Nesting Utility extracts that part with quantity = 1. This is not the expected behavior and has already been fixed. The fix will be available in 2019.2 Update.

With this fix, Nesting Utility will exclude these parts (BOM QTY=0) from the shape extraction process. This would allow selective removal of parts from a nest as other techniques like suppression and turning off visibility are not effective to do this.

Thanks,

Ravi

Yes, that was corrected. But with the new update the report is HTML but is always a black screen. How can I correct it?

@javizloco thanks for your feedback. glad to hear that result is correct now.

and for the HTML report background color, by default it should be white. Could you please save the report and then attach here, then I will check the reason?

thanks,

Amy

I don't know how to save the report, I always take the text and copy it to a notepad, but now is an HTML window, so I don't know how to save the report. Report.png

javizloco,

There is obviously something wrong with the way the report shows up on your machine.
The window you show in the screenshot seems to be some kind of mix between the old report and the new report.

A correct new report should have a save/print menu at the top right of the window. You certainly don't have those menus. Could you provide more details about your situation:

- a copy of the data set
- language version of Inventor (I assume from the screenshot that it is English)

- the language on your OS

- do you have the same problem on brand new nests created in version 2019.2?

- if it is a nest created in a previous version, does a Calculate on the nest change the situation?

etc.

The language in Inventor is English, the language of the OS is Spanish, I have trouble with old nests, new nest, nest from assemblies, nest from DXF. When you say "a copy of the data set", can you specify? Because I tried with different files.

We might be onto something here.  Maybe the mismatch between the OS and the Inventor language might be the issue but I will let our QA team confirm this theory overnight.
Looks like your issue is not data set specific, so no need to send us any data set.

Thanks.
