Need Help Creating Carbon Nanotube

Anonymous

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone knew how I would go about making a carbon nanotube in Autodesk Inventor 2016. I'm not really familar with this type of software, I have used Google Sketchup before, but only briefly. If anyone could point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.  I attached some pictures of carbon nanotubes below.

Thank you!!!

just completed in Inventor, if just to grasp the work flow in that software and get an idea of what direction to go. Will explore doing so in Acad, hopefully I don't get frustrated trying to work with 3D in there...

1. Make a sketch of a hexagon. Make a sphere on one of the corners.

2. Make a sketch across a hexagonal axis, make a sketch perpindicular to that plane across the middle of the hexagon leg. Extrude a cylinder to connect it

3. Pattern the spehere/cylinder around the axis of the hexagon.

4. Pattern your nanotubes lengthwise down the overall cylindrical structure

5. Pattern the nanotubes around the cylindrical axis.

maybe I need a terminology refresher...for some reason I thought I had read this in the AutoCAD forum and assumed that was the software the OP was using. Headsmack...

Here is 1 way of doing it, depending on what your needs are.

For a class assignment - I need to create something in Autodesk Inventor.

I don't have time to learn Inventor - so I don't have anything to show as my effort.

Can someone here do my assignment for me and attach the file here?

I'll do it, how many days do you have and what do I get in return for this complex project?

CADWhisperer, I'm aware of a "train" model some classes are doing...haven't heard of anybody doing nanotubes for a lesson though...have you?

Nope. Been here long enough to know what CADWhisperer is referring to (has happened previously here) and was wondering if that person had any knowledge of this type of assignment. If this is an assignment...if I were to reply - I would tend to only give them a worm or two to fish with...I wouldn't provide the whole fish to them so to speak.

Ok, so I have a problem, I looked at the way MechMachineMan went about creating the nanotube, but it won't let me select anything to pattern. I have a .iam file of a single graphene hexagonal unit already. So, then I went and created a .ipt file of a cylinder. Next, I created another assembly file and placed both components into the modeling area. For some reason when I go to circular pattern it will let me select the axis, but not the features to pattern. The actual hexagonal model, I made by creating a cylinder and then I attached a sphere to the end of it and saved it as an ipt file. Then I went in assembly, and copied it over 6 times until it shaped into a hexagon. What exactly am I doing wrong here and why won't it let me press OK?

You pattern features in a part.

You pattern components in an assembly.

Attach your assembly here.

Just a reminder. The graphene hexagon in a nanotube isn't a 2D hexagon. It's slightly crooked. So starting of by creating your basic 2D hexagon won't get you where you want.

The first thing that you need to know is the science of nanotubes themselves. Do the angles between all the covalent bonds remain identical even if they aren't located in the same 2d plane anymore? Does the graphene get stretched out somewhat in the direction of the tube itself?

Once you know exactly how your basic carbon hexagon works, it's a simple matter of creating half a hexagon (three atoms, three bonds) and patterning it.

Best regards

OK, that's enough to cause my brain to bleed! I'll kick back and wait for other posts such as "how do I model an H2O molecule in Inventor?" LOL

Ok, so some one showed me how a simpler way to create the hexagons and the graphene sheets as a part file rather than in an assembly and I've run into another problem. Im't to revolve the other parts so that the look like the one that is already revloved around, but it gves me this error. (See picture below)

It worked when he did it this afternoon, so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

This project isn't to complicated for Inventor. Spacing, curving, patterning, copying, rotating, seems to be related to Trigonometry.
