Layer drop down on to IDW sketch tab

I want to add

Layer Drop Down (same like on IDW/Annotate tab)

CrisIdeas_0-1705309207201.png

on to IDW/Sketch tab.

So far I was not able to do so.

Any advice on how to get this done?

Hi,

Click RMB in Ribbon Area and select "Customize User Command"

Alexander_Chernikov_0-1705337977230.png

Next at the right size select "Drawing / Sketch" (2)/

At the left side (1) find command "Layer" and press button ">>" to move it on the right side

(select both squares)

You find Layer Control at "User Comand" Panel

Thanks for suggestion, but this does not really work.

I did that, even before coming to the forum.

This does not work as expected.

1) instead of the drop down it only gives an arrow on the rebon

2) this arrow only expands to layer list after clicking twice. first time the list is just blank.

So not really something I am looking for.

How do I get properly customizable user interface?

Then maybe add the Layer command from the Annotation panel to the Quick Access Toolbar?

This gives exactly same effect

I also looked in dropdown control  category - also no solution there.

But I believe this is possible somehow.

perhaps with some plugin or something if not simply through UI customization.

Hi Cris,

I am sorry to reply to you late. I could be wrong but I don't think this is a supported workflow. The issue here is that the entire drawing sketch and all geometry are placed on the same layer. The only control is in the Styles Editor -> Layer -> Sketch Geometry. There isn't a way to specify certain sketch geometry to a different layer (unlike AutoCAD).

If you still have access to AutoCAD, you may want to consider using AutoCAD as the drafting tool. AutoCAD can create associative drawing views to Inventor components (VIEWBASE). Also AutoCAD can link to Inventor components to Model Space (Inventor Link).

Many thanks!

Hi Johnson,

I must inform you that you are in fact wrong.

Sketch geometry can be assigned to any layer I want. But to do that I constantly need to go to Annotation tab to dropdown.

That is actually very useful.

I do that every time when creating title blocks and sketch symbols.

Thus I want to layer crop down directly on the sketch tab, or any other tab for that matter.

Problem is not in the assignment objects to layers, but with customizing UI.

How can I place a layer drop down on to a ribbon tab I chose?

Hi Cris,

Indeed, I was wrong. I was not aware of this work. I thought the drawing sketches can only be assigned to one layer as a whole, not individual sketch geometry.

Unfortunately, I am not aware of a way to make the Layer dropdown menu available in Drawing Sketch environment.

Many thanks!

Hi Johnson,

So again, I am not looking to make it available in drawing sketch environment.

It is already available there as I explained.

I am simply looking for a way to move one UI item from one ribbon tab to another.

I can easily add any command on to any ribbon using UI customization under RMB context menu.

But when it comes to drop down UI elements, like for instance layer drop down, this does not work, even thought it should.

As shown in previous post it is possible to place "layer" on the ribbon and this should result in having a drop down, that actually almost works (if we are happy with having a drop down under an arrow icon instead of a standard familiar looking drop down lost box, and the fact that it needs to be clicked twice to actually displayed populated list instead of blank list).

This is a vary simple and basic question.

How to add a UI object (drop down) to a ribbon?

For YEARS Autodesk is advertising "Fully customizable UI" so pleas show me how.

I cam easily do that in Autocad from many years back. So I refuse to accept that Inventor, much more expensive program, does not have this simple functionality.

If not possible with build in UI customization menu, can someone show how to do that with plugin, Just for the sake of proving this can be done and Autodesk should have made it from the start.

I think you understand perfectly.

How did you manage to get this? How did you place this drop down on the bar?

Press RMB on Layer command in Annotate Tab and select "Add to Q/A Toolbar"
(as I suggested in message 4)

Alexander_Chernikov_0-1705827399888.png

then this dropdown item will be on all tabs in the drawing environment.

Thanks,

missed that.

Actually I found another solution just now.

I have just made Format a floating panel and it stays always available.
