Inventor Slow with file explorer

Hi, yes another post about inventor being laggy but I tried a lot of solutions from other posts without any success. So here is my problem.

For a couple of weeks now, I've notice that inventor takes a very long time opening assembly AND just opening the "File explorer" too. here are the solutions I tried:

-Update inventor 2024.3

-Update Autodesk licensing

-Update Windows

-Uninstall Inventor

-Restart Computer/Inventor/Everything

-Whitelist Inventor on Windows Defender

-Check on Tasks Manager if something unusual is happening

-Changing parameters inside my Project (.ipj) Unique file

-Uncheck Show Home on Startup

-tried to put everything back to "default folder"

-Stop Onedrive

-Use the Inventor reset utility

-Deleted some key inside the REGISTRY

In context, I dont have vault and im the only one working with Inventor. We use OneDrive to put all our parts and assemblies. Everything is downloaded on my computer and inside my .ipj, everything points to a local folder (not on OneDrive). I don't think its an hardware problem because everything started overnight.

Exemple: I just started Inventor and I click on the "open file button"

Takes about 30 to 45s to open. Then if I close it and reopen it, no more waiting time. Same thing for every button that use the "File explorer". 

Please help me I dont know what to do anymore😂

Oh no not the registry editor🤣 ill wait for other solutions before playing with that but thanks.

Hi! A few other things to look at. Go to Windows Display options and select the recommended resolution and scale. Right-click on Inventor desktop icon -> Properties -> Compatibility -> "Change High DPI settings" -> check both boxes. Also check "Run as Admin."

Clean up %temp%. Check the project setting to see if there is any unused server path or library path and remove them (keep the most frequently used ones).

I checked the "open as admin" box  and it seems to work. There is no loading time but I need to test it more to be sure. The only problem I have with that solution is half the time, Inventor doesn't launch or it start a new instance. Kinda weird. 

Do you have any explanation for why in admin, Inventor is "faster" Thanks

Hi! I think it has something to do with the Windows user profile privilege. I think it is more about folder access. As an admin, you are allowed to access all folders and all files on your system. Inventor needs to access files in many places. With admin privilege, it can access files freely without any restriction. So it may run faster.

Hi @johnsonshiue , So I confirm when I open Inventor as administrator, there is no waiting time but if I double click on  a part, it open a new instance of Inventor. Any way to fix that? I tried via Windows Task Scheduler but no good result. Thanks

While IV running as Admin, can't drag and drop files from Explorer.

I'm not sure if I understood correctly but im not trying to Drag and Drop, it's when I double click on a part it open a new instance but not as admin so it's still slow..

Just letting Johnson know there is another problem with IV running as Admin.

Hi! I could be wrong but I suspect the user profile has some specific restriction blocking certain functions from working. Here is a related article about how to change Windows setting so that Inventor open multiple documents within the same app window, as opposed to multiple Inventor instances.

So I read the article and did everything they said but there's a problem. If I double click on a part with the "Open as administrator" checked, inventor will launch the loading menu then nothing. I checked in the task manager and he's there but no display. Thanks

Hi! Any of the prior suggestions should have fixed it. I am sorry I am clueless at the moment. I guess you will need to install Microsoft Process Monitor tool and record a log (filter out all processes except Inventor.exe). Then zip up the log and share it with me ([email protected]) on a cloud drive of your choice. The log may be able to show what exactly happened behind the scene during the hang.

I donwloaded the process explorer and I made a "Dump File" of my Inventor process. Is that what you wanted?

Hi! It would be better if it is Microsoft Process Monitor (not Explorer). They are two different things. Monitor tells more detail process. Please feel free to share the Explorer log with me [email protected]. I will let you know if I see anything interesting.

I am reading this log but is there a solution for this problem? I am facing the same problem.
When you start the program (inventor) as a local admin, you have the rights locally in the profile, but not on the network i think. 

Is there already a solution?

Most of these types of issues I've had were due to incorrect use/understanding of how the project file works and its efficiency (or lack thereof) in Inventor. Definitely start there, try the "Default" project file...is it any better? if yes, what are the differences?...and so on. Next, create a "bare bones" project file that searches only one directory and doesn't tree down anywhere else...is that any better?...and so on.

Hi @ksi15 ksi15,  I’m not sure if this applies to your situation, but in my case, the problem was caused by an old server directory (not sure what to call it exactly). Every time I opened File Explorer, Inventor would try to access this server, but it was corrupt.

Even though my project file was configured correctly and didn’t point to the server, Inventor was still trying to load it. I ended up removing the server reference from Windows, and that solved the issue—Inventor stopped searching for it.

Like @mluterman  suggested, definitely double-check your project file. But if everything looks fine there, I’d recommend checking your Windows directories to see if there’s anything lingering that could be slowing things down.
