inventor hsm question

I am trying to create a hsm gcode file to cut out someone's name (Gus).

I create the text in autocad, did a txtexp operation, and then imported into IV.

The profile extruded no problem, however, when I try to select the profile lines as contours only the capital G is seen by IV as a continuous line.

The lines defining the remaining letters (u and s) are not seen as a continuous line, rather as a bunch of individual segments (pls see attached pic).

I suppose I could select each line segment individually, but I am thinking there must be a better way than that?

Any suggestions as to how to get IV to see these individual lines as a single continuous line?

I've already run Sketch Doctor on the sketch with no issues.

Thanks

Frank

@Anonymous Frank, Why didn't you just do the text in Inventor and extrude?

What font was it?

Oops, so it was an Inventor question - I need to read more carefully.

Not necessarily.. HSM does recognize the outline (loop) of one of the letters but not the rest..

But id think that if you did it all in Inventor it might work just fine..

Its probably some limitation with exploded text,etc.. that no one but this user really comes across blah blah blah.. they won't fix it anytime soon anyways so a workaround would be what they need to do anyways.. blah blah.. Smiley Happy

Hi! There are a few ways to smooth the geometry. You could open the dwg file in AutoCAD and do PEDIT -> select the polyline -> FitCurve. It will turn the polyline into spline.

Another way to do it is to edit the sketch in Inventor and trace a spline by picking the vertices. It is a bit tedious but it should work. The resultant profile should be a lot smoother. Or, you can add small fillets to the edges.

Many thanks!

Thanks for all the tips folks.

I also got a reply at the HSM forum (thanks JD).

It is here for anyone interested:
