How do I get a model from Maya to Inventor and be able to edit or get measurements off to recreate the model?

Does Maya save in STEP (*.stp), IGES (*.igs) or ACIS (*.sat) or *.dwg format?

If so, can you Attach an example file here?

I've tried it with a sample from Maya. Results of some attempted filetypes:

- Inventor ATF: Nothing

- Parasolid (x_b): Only a few surfaces

- IGS: Same as above

- OBJ: Looks best, but is mesh geometry

 

The mesh needs to be converted using Mesh Enabler, but the geometry still consits of many small planar faces after that.

I would suggest to export from Maya as STEP file. This should easily import into Inventor and also you will have any geometry you need.

Maya, as visualization software, works with meshes rather than solids.  That means the object can be mechanically or physically impossible even though it looks "OK" in Maya.

 

If this is a mechanical object with regular features, then you're generally better off starting from scratch in Inventor and building it using correct procedures with general measurements from the mesh (let the rest fall into play with constraints and good judgement).  If the shape is highly organic (i.e. lots of finely detailed surfaces) reconstructing it in Inventor will be a serious struggle, regardless of mesh import or dumb reference.

I am trying to convert a skid steer over to Inventor. Nothing that needs to be sculptured

Have you tried creating a drawing?

Inventor 2019 does an impressive job of creating drawing views from mesh. (at least in some cases, but I would highly question the dimensioning)

Hi! It largely depends on who many triangles the mesh has. If it was in millions, I think you will see poor performance. Are you trying to use the mesh as a reference to rebuild the model?
