Inventor Contact Solver Issues

Whilst following the Inventor tutorials, there was a rotating disk that needed to be propelled at intervals via a camshaft. when I isolated the two parts, created a contact set and turned on contact solver, the camshaft kept teleporting past the tabs, but when the disk moved the camshaft it was perfectly fine. Does anyone know how to solve this? I have attached a video bellow for visualization.

Where can we find these A-014-001_from2010 files?

Shortly later: Found it here: 3d-modeling-md-inventor-datasets.zip\201015_Resources_Bottle Filling Station\Assemblies

Download source: https://files.upskill-dev.autodesk.com/public/3d_modeling_for_mechanical_design/3d-modeling-md-inven...

Once more later: Duplicate naming. It's here: Datasets Solutions\Bottle Filling Station\Bottle Filling Station\Workspaces\Station\Assemblies

Looks like a bug. It's working ok in 2021, but no more in 2023. I didn't test 2022.

But driving in 2021 by added angle constraint ends in intermediate stops, too.

Speed is the problem.  Move your mouse more slowly and it works.  The reason it appears to be teleporting past the tab is because you are finding the alternative mathematical solution to the contact set.

Contact solver is a mathematical solution to the contact between the objects in the scene and there may be more than one solution depending on the scene.  In a scene like yours, you move the mouse so quickly through P100-044, the math doesn't have time to solve the initial contact and the cam appears to jump right through the thing it is supposed to contact - i.e. The next available solution.  Drag the cam slowly and P100-044 will rotate as expected.

What's happening will be more obvious if you ground P100-044 to stop it moving.  Grab the cam and drag it slowly into P100-044 - the cam will stop at the first face it hits.  Keep dragging your mouse through P100-044 to the far side of the tab and suddenly the cam will pop through to your mouse location.  You just found the next valid solution to the contact solver math.

I don't think so, Peter. See attached video with 2021. You can't do the same with 2023.

I'll have to agree with Walter on this one, speed doesn't seem to be the issue here as even if I drag the camshaft slowly, it still pops out the other side, so my best guess is that its a bug. Hopefully this can be fixed in the future and thanks for some insight on Contact Solver!

Hi Walter,

There are quite a few files in the attached dataset. Do you mind showing me which assembly you opened to record the video?

Many thanks!

Hi everyone,

unfortunately I have the same problem (I'm trying to complete the 3D Modeling for Mechanical Design Using Inventor Course too). Did you find a solution? Thanks in advance.

Pardon me for late reply, Johnson.

Right now I've created a 2022 P&G for the problem. The shaft is moving ok versus P-100-044. but it refuses the movement in 2023.

I've suppressed unnecessary parts in the IAM, and suggest for leaving them in this situation.

Hey there,

any new fixes for this problem under Inventor Pro 2024?

@livius_strachotta

Are you working on the same problem - or on a different project?

Rather than use Contact Sets - I would use Environments>Dynamic Simulation 2D or 3D Contact Joints.

Hi,

I am indeed working on the same problem from the 3D Modeling Course.

Let me try out your suggestion, I will come back to you.

Thank you

It is not working like I intend to (or like the tutorial is showing).

I am using the 2021 version now instead

Perhaps I'm allowed to hint at feedback.autodesk.com.
Next Inventor release is working well.

Hi Walter,

I guess the testable version may have an updated assembly constraint solver.

Many thanks!

Hello. I had the same issue with the 2023 version. Tried it with the 2024 version but it still doesn't work. Are there any upcoming updates  to solve it?

Hi! Please share the files in zip here. The forum experts and I can help take a look to see if the Contact issue is the same or it has been resolved.

Many thanks!

@johnsonshiue I am also taking this course with the same problem. Here is a file where I followed the tutorial up to the point it stops working.

Hi to Johnson and other readers,

perhaps I should take a look here into this forum more often, but in the past I've been mainly watching both German Inventor and Fusion forums.

I just grabbed my test set from January 2023 in Inventor 2022, and it's been working ok. But no more luck with 2023 and 2024. I can upload my test set, if needed. It's not too big.
I'll try some more behind the lines.

Nice to be back here

Walter
