I have a situation where I'm working with someone else on a project. They are creating large assemblies and then doing a pack and go to export the parts and then sending those files to me. I then try to open for instance a single sheetmetal part and Inventor derives that sheetmetal part into a new part instead of simply opening it. Anyone ever experience this scenario?

It's probably done in a newer version and your inventor is using any cad to open it.
When you click on the file in the open dialogue box, it tells you in the bottom left what version it was saved in.
Only opening in the same version or newer will show all the feature tree in the browser.
