Inventor 2020 - start new sketch.. doesn't work!

Hi, I have been using inventor 2017 for the last couple of years.  Just started a new job and downloaded the trial version of Inventor 2020 Professional.

Problem: The "start 2D sketch" button brings up the 3 planes as usual, but clicking on one only highlights it, it doesn't then allow you to place lines and so on.

The tooltip still says "select plane to create sketch or select existing sketch".  I have tried restarting the software and creating new parts and projects.  I'm on Windows 10 enterprise 64 bit.

What is going on, how can I move past this?

Can you create a Screencast Recording of the behavior that you observe?

Hi Evan,

Are you using multiple monitors? Is the part document on a different screen?

Many thanks!

I'm having exactly the same problem, and I'm disappointed that the issue hasn't been resolved by Autodesk yet on this thread.

Hi! This could be environment related. We heard sporadic cases like this but there isn't a repeatable pattern. Please try a few things and see if it works better. Do you have multiple monitors? If yes, the cursor or the focus is probably in a different monitor. Is the Inventor document window undocked? If yes, please click it and get back the focus.

If nothing above applies to you, try using Inventor Reset Utility (All Programs -> Autodesk -> Inventor 2020 -> Tools) to reset all settings back to 2020 install default.

Many thanks!

How do you know that it hasn't been resolved.

The OP never answered any questions to help track down the issue his computer and never returned with follow-up.

But let's try this again, Can you create a Screencast Recording of the behavior that you observe?

You have not including any actionable information.

No screen capture images?

No system specifications?

Nothing!

Let's try this for the third request.

Can you create a Screencast Recording of the behavior that you observe?

Can you reply to me professionally and stop being so arrogant and rude. I
have a question about a software program that isn’t working for me, and you
want to come out and tell me why I’m wrong.

Hi Christopher,

I know you are eager to resolve the issue, but indeed the information you provided so far is not enough. Did you take a look at my prior reply? Did you try Inventer Reset Utility? Do you have two monitors?

Many thanks!

Hi Johnson,  Thank you for the helpful tips!  I’m sure those tips will help users.  In my case, I’d used Inventor extensively years past, but I’m rusty and some functionality has changed.  In this case, clicking directly on origin planes (xy, yz, xz) wouldn’t work.  However, when I clicked on the origin plane then attempted to drag the plane, but then reset the offset to zero, “that worked.”  I’m not sure if that’s a newbie mistake that I’m rediscovering, and/or “works as intended,” but it worked for me.  I suspect others “early in their learning curve” might bump into this, so I’m happy to post here, hoping it helps others.  Either way, thank you for posting possible solutions!

Hi! Clicking the origin plane should work. Something is wrong. Try this. Right-click on the origin plane in the browser -> New Sketch. Does it work?

Many thanks!

Thank You For The Follow Up!  That works now.  I’m glad the glitch was transient.  Thank You Again!

Using the Autodesk Inventor Reset Utility solves the problem.  I had the same issue and it got solved.  Below is a link on how to do it properly without loosing your customized settings or application options.
