Inventor 2018 crashes constantly after service update

Anonymous
Not applicable

I installed the Inventor 2018 (INV22010) hotfix yesterday, and since that happened, the program seems to crash at random several minutes after opening.  I don't even have to be doing anything to get it to crash.  It will even occur when my system is sitting idle.  Windows reports that Inventor has stopped working and force-closes what I was working on.  I'm still able to open the project I was working on, but anything that happened between my last save and the crash was lost.

@SašoPrijatelj   it's the same issue of the License server ...

They need to resolve it, or it'll keep happening ever 20 minutes

The issue overnight should be resolved now.  The licensing team is working hard to prevent further issues and increase reliability.  They did release a hotfix a few weeks ago which is suppose to have prevented this crash if the is a problem with the service.  The patch is available here:

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/search-result/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Product-crash-when-commu...

If anyone still experiences this crashing behavior after having applied this patch we'd very much like to hear from you to collect more information.

I want to kick this thread once more just for some clarification.  Our licensing team released a separate hotfix for their licensing code where the product would crash when it unsuccessfully tried to communicate with our licensing service.  This code impacts single user subscription licenses.  The patch is available here:  https://knowledge.autodesk.com/search-result/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Product-crash-when-commu...  as well as through Autodesk Desktop App and the MyAccounts portal.

In this thread people were talking about Inventor's recent 2018 Update which didn't affect the licensing component.  I'm very interested in hearing from customers who had the above licensing HF applied yet still crashed when the licensing service went down on the 2nd or the 11th.  If you did, please shoot me an e-mail if you're willing to answer a few troubleshooting questions.

Possibly unrelated but we have 3 seats of "inventor 2018 PDSU", two with 2018.0.2 update and one at 2018.0.1. on both versions today we've had Autodesk desktop pop-up messages saying can't connect to server! I assume this is at Autodesk end, is it the same licensing server issue ongoing?

Cheers.

Activation issues persist after licensing hotfix applied.  Inventor launches in trial mode, when attempting to activate, Inventor will close to desktop with no error messages.  Process is repeatable every time.

Hi Kenneth,

Did you submit crash report? If yes, could you send me an email ([email protected])? I would like to take a look at the crash report and understand it better.

Many thanks!

The crash reports you sent in are unrelated to the licensing issue reported in this thread.

The crash you are experiencing is caused by an issue with the Microsoft 7 .NET Framework installation.  Microsoft pushed this update to everyone in one of their Tuesday updates earlier this month.   Microsoft has already released a fix for this issue for Windows 10 users, but so far no updates for all of the other Windows versions.

I will email you directly with a file to test to see if it allows you get Inventor running.

Mine just started happening earlier this week (Aug 21/17).  It freezes when opening a file, and I have to end it through the control panel.  It doesn't give me an option to send an error report.

Not being able to check files into the vault also started this week too.  At first, the attached message flashed very quickly, now it doesn't.  It seemed to freeze here too but escape let me work in the file again... but still not checkin.

Are the two related?  I just did the latest hotfix with no luck.

Thanks in advance,

Robyn

If the escape will allow you to work again, it's possible that the check in dialog is off the display. Press ALT+SPACE then M for move. You can use your mouse or arrow keys to try to bring the window back into view to have access to the buttons in it for check in.

Hi! Could you help us understand the issue better by trying a few things? Does it only happen when Vault Add-In is loaded? What is the exact build you are running (Inventor and Vault)? You mentioned that it worked before 8/21. Did you install any update from Autodesk right before or on 8/21?

Many thanks!

Hello Johnson.... I don't know if I can even explain it.  I am finding more error messages.

I hadn't installed anything before it started happening but installed the latest inventor patch after it started in the hopes that it was the problem.

Inventor is build 171, Release 2018.1.1

Vault is build 23.0.76.0

-  Usually when I check in, I right click on the file in the list and check it in.  This morning I tried going under the vault tab and nothing.  Tried under File, and an error message saying "on or more documents have been modified but the save was unsuccessful.  You must save the document prior to check in".  It then says the file is read only so I have to give it a new name.  Needless to say, this will cause a lot of confusion.

-  Opened a file this morning and it said the assembly had changed.  Hadn't had this particular assy opened in a while.  Made a change to a part, saved it, went to the assy and when I hit update, it said "one or more derived objects had their export status turned off in the source.  Use design doctor for treatment options.".  Did that, assy updated, but still can't check in.  It hasn't prompted me to "checkout" when I've been opening it.

I can open from the vault, but can't check in our out??

Hopefully this info helps.

Robyn

Hi Robyn,

for the first message, "one or more documents have been modified but the save was unsuccessful. You must save the document prior to check in", this is due to some files referenced in the assembly are read-only so that auto-save cannot performed. Save the files manually by Save button and then do check in, it should work. If you have all the files checked out, you don't need to save the file with a new name.

For the second message, would you mind sharing me the dataset for further investigation?  (you can send to my email if the model is not large, or I can provide you a location to upload you data. [email protected]) When you say still cannot check in, do you mean the Check In command is grey out or still get the first message? If you have the file status in Vault like the image you attached in previous post, these files are already checked out.

Thanks,

Rachel

Hi Rachel,

This morning, I opened an assy and tried to save it.  Gave me the "already exists/read only" message.  I then checked it out, save, and it saved fine.  However, it still won't check in and I still get the "Identifying suppressed files" message.  Note, Vault has always prompted me to confirm the files I want to check out but has stopped doing this.  Vault settings are set to "always prompt".  It seems to hang when I open it and I have to hit escape for it to finish... almost like it was waiting for me to click something but there is no popup window. (see below)

The second message... I used design doctor like it said and didn't get that particular message again.

I was thinking this morning... the inventor issues started after I installed the new update (originally I thought it was before).  I installed the update because I got a "display driver" error in Autocad, did an update, saw there was one for inventor so did it too.  Could this all be the display driver?  Is it just not showing me the "checkout window" when I open a file?  Our IT guy says he is getting me a new one but who knows when he'll show back up.

Hi Robyn,

The message "Identifying suppressed files" to processing file is expected before Check In dialog prompts. It flashes if it is not a large number of files needed to be processing. Looks like the Check In dialog blocks the window. How about try to suppress the Check in dialog and execute the check in command again? Inventor Ribbon Vault tab->Vault Options->Check the check box of Check In dialog. Then the check in dialog will not show and execute check in automatically.

dialog_suppression.png

Note, for confirm whether to check out message, if you have already have the files checked out, the message will not prompt. If you open files from local workspace not from Vault, the message will not prompt even you have not checked them out, but when you try to edit model, the message will prompt.

But if you just mean the check out dialog which list the files will be checked out, please double check if the options to suppress check out dialog is checked in above dialog.

BTW, I don't think it's related to the display driver.

Thanks,

Rachel

Thanks again Rachel.  I always open from the vault then check everything in, and delete temporary files when finished.  I no longer see this window.  I checked the settings and they are as you indicate but I am still getting no prompts.  I just don't get why hitting escape seems to unlock the hangups.  If I go to the vault, hit checkin, it shows me the window with the option to keep temp files or delete.  I then get message saying I have to check files in through inventor which I have seen before so expected it.

Not sure if it's relative but the assy's are also taking forever to open now, like it's getting hung up.  Hitting escape multiple times seems to work but it may just be a coincidence.  These are not large assy's and it has never taken this long.

I feel like I am all over the map with this thread and apologize.  Is there a way to revert to the previous version?  If so, what about the files that have already been migrated?  Although, I don't think any of them are in the vault so it may not matter.  I believe my next option is to hire someone to look at it.  😞
