Inventor 2017 Update 2017.4.4 needed?

Anonymous

Hello,

I am a new user, running Inventor 2017 Educational. I wish to use a .ipt file created elsewhere, but on opening it I receive an error message (see attachment).

I do not seem able to access the required update 2017.4.4, presumably because of the lack of subscription on my license?

I would be grateful for any advice.

Thank you.

Mark

Hello Mark,

It seems you are try to open a future released saved data, you can check what's the exactly version it is by following steps.

Launch Inventor and click Open, navigate to the file, you will find the version information in the left bottom area.

If it shows as Inventor 2018, then, please install the 2017.4.4 to enable the Future CAD function.

Hope it helps!

Hi Mark,

I think education license users are also entitled to subscription updates. Did you log in to your Autodesk account before accessing the the page? You will need to install 2017.4 first followed by 2017.4.4.

Many thanks!

Assuming you get the licensing sorted out (Educational should have fully access to all updates AFAIK) make sure you are aware that Inventor files are NOT backwards compatible..

This "anycad" allows you to reference newer files but does NOT allow you to modify them as if they are a native Inventor file created on the same version you have..

As a new user I caution that you shouldn't be mixing versions and if you are in a class use the same version the school uses and don't install a newer version at home or anything else..

Why do you only have 2017 anyways? 2019 is out and as a student you have access to it.. But again.. If your school is only on 2017 then stay with 2017 at school and at home..

Hello,
Thanks for the advice.
I am logged into my account and I have tried looking for the required updates, but my AutoDesk Desktop App tells me that there are none available, so I have not been able to progress.

Hello,
Thanks for the help.
The problem has arisen because I am trying to access files created at another institution. Unfortunately I don't have easy access to the original author just now, but when I do, a solution would be I guess to ask him to resave as 'older version' files (assuming that is possible).
I will also try to find the required updates, or attempt to download the most recent version if I can.
Regards,
Mark

So I found this in another post that is likely why you cannot get the updates..

If your student account was created prior to 2018, you'll need to make a new account with a new email address. Then you'll be able to download the update via 'updates & addons'.

Seems like a bit of a hassle.... But welcome to the world of free software/school.. It can't always be Roses and Tulips for you... Eventually the real world hits you in the face.. Smiley Very Happy

Hello @Anonymous I see that you are visiting as a new member to the Inventor Forum.
Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

If you go to manage.autodesk.com through a web browser instead of using the app, does the ability to upgrade show up there?

As stated prior you could make sure you are logged in and try here:

Hello @Anonymous,

I have looked into this for you & I see the update is available in Autodesk Accounts for student license under Inventor Professional "Updates & Addons".

If you do not see it there try going back to the educational site & sign-in go to:

  •  "Free Software" page, you will also receive an email containing your Serial# & product key & this information will appear in your Autodesk Account in 24-72hrs

Thanks for all the advice.

I solved the issue by un-installing the older 2017 version of Inventor, and then re-installing the 2019 version, which was available to me.

I can now open the file sent by my collaborator, created in a recent version.

Thank you very much for leading me to the location of the Autodesk Inventor 2017 update 2017.4.4.  I have downloaded and installed them all.
