Inventor 2015 Emboss wrap to face bug

Anonymous
Not applicable

I've encountered a rather annoying and very repeatable bug in inventor 2015.

My company makes a lot of forgings. It is very common for us to take a forging and turn down a boss for roll stamping.

We have just recently upgraded from Inventor 2013 to 2015 and we're now experiencing a bug relating to wrap to face in an emboss command.

Our normal work flow is as follows:

Create forging part --> Derive forging into machined part file --> turn down boss with revolved cut --> wrap to face emboss text on boss

In inventor 2015 we're seeing unpredictable results with the wrap to face, including backwards text as well as text that ends up floating off in the distance no where near the face its supposed to be wrapping to.

We have found that if we instead turn down the boss with an extruded cut instead of a revolve the emboss solves correctly. This is inconvenient because we then add an additional chamfer that before could just be part of the revolved profile.

This problem was not present in inventor 2013. The same exact workflow presented zero issues.

I have attached an example ipart showing the unexpected emboss result and our workaround. Please note this example skips the derive and instead creates the boss directly in the part file. This DOES NOT EFFECT the outcome of the emboss failure. (I add this only because when posting here previously people seem to to miss the forest for the trees. I can recreate this bug with or without the derive. The failure is in the emboss command)

Mike,

As I have replied to you via Feedback form, this is indeed a defect. The Emboss behavior in 2015 is wrong. It seems to have something to do with full Revolve Cut carving out the cylinder. Inventor got confused with the orientation. I have forwarded the case to development for further review. I will make sure it get resolved in a timely manner.

Thanks!

Hi Johnson,

Good to finally meet you at AU this year.

Is there a fix to this issuie in progress? I am experiencing similar issues.

I initially had trouble getting the text to locate correct once the emboss feature was created.

After playing with it fora while it final stayed put. But, in addition, my test emboss is telegraphing through my curved part & some of it is exposed on the back side. See images.

Hi! Gary,

It was very nice to meet you at AU too. I am so glad to see many enthusiastic Inventor users there. This Emboss issue is not yet resolved. We are currently evaluating a fix. The defect is actually about how Emboss wrap to cylindrical face created by Revolve Cut (negative sine angle). We notice that if the cylinder is not created by Revolve Cut, the problematic behavior does not happen.

The best I can offer before the fix becomes available is to tweak the model so that the particular cylindrical face Emboss needs to wrap to is created by anything except Revolve Cut. If you want, I can help you further.

Many thanks!

I am seeing a similar problem with 2016. A coworker had a plate with multiple plateaus (created from the same extruded cut feature) and when trying to emboss engraved letters on them, showed a failure where the emboss would actually wrap to the opposite surface.

I simplified the part to the bare minimum of features and discovered if I bridged the plateaus, multple text profiles would emboss correctly. Selecting an additional piece of text outside the bridged plateau would cause the same failure.

An extruded cut of the engraving text would work fine across all the plateaus. It was just the emboss.

Here are some screenshots. I think I've scrubbed the file (proprietary/ITAR) enough that it could be safe to post here if Autodesk wants to see it.

works with J1 and J2 plateaus bridged:

Will fail when selecting J3 outside the conjoined plateau:

Emboss appears on opposite surface (and backwards of course)!
