Insert Image to sketch around

I was wondering, is it possible to import an image into inventor so that i can sketch around it?

For example, I take a image of a TV remote. I want to import that image into inventor so that i would be able to sketch around the outline of tv remote.

I think using this method, it would be much faster than trying to get the dimensions of whatever item i took a image of.

Instead of a tv remote, i need to create an outline of something more complicated, I do not have the skills nor the time to visually try to recreate whatever item. Thus, being about the use a image in inventor would just much simpler to create an outline.

thanks

Hi! Like other experts have mentioned, you can insert an image to a sketch. Then manually trace the lines using 2D sketch commands. If you have access to AutoCAD, you could use Raster Design to convert the image to vector lines/curves.

Many thanks!

Thanks for the information you have provided.

I am having an issue with image scaling when i insert it into inventor.

I am trying to trac the handle base of the NES ZAPPER GUN. I took a picture of it to trace. When i open the image on my desktop, the size of the base is the same as the physical gun.

However, when i insert it into inventor, and start tracing it with lines, i have an issue. The lines i track are all way way too long.

For example, a part i traced should be 1.125 inches long. This is how it for the physical gun and the image i took. However, in inventor the line is something like 25 inches long.

Hi! I see the issue now. You are talking about scaling the image to true size. I guess you may want to edit the image in an editor like Paint and set the image size accordingly. Then insert it to Inventor sketch. Another option is to create a rectangle in the sketch. Dimension the rectangle to the desirable scale. Insert the image and drag the image so it fills the rectangle.

Many thanks!

1. Place image in sketch.

2. Sketch line across a portion of image that you know true size.

3. Dimension the line true size.

The image will automatically scale to true size.

Easy peasy!
