I'm so lost - Modifying a Surface Composite Model

I have a 3rd party surface composite model that I want to modify.  I have spent the last hour or so looking for a straight answer on how to do this and if anything, I'm more confused than ever.  Every solution I've read might as well be in a foreign language.  I am completely lost and out of my element.  I just don't understand how to modify this type of model in any way.

 

File attached.  This is a radiator component.  It is currently 102 inches wide.  I need to modify it to be 96 inches wide.  I want to cut 3 inches out of one side and the same on the other side in order to retain all existing ports.  I've added the green extrusions myself to indicate where I want to cut and remove material.  After chopping the model into 3 sections, I then want to put them back together to form the new 96-inch wide component.

 

Honestly, I am ready to give up.  Rather than waste even more time trying to figure this out, I'm going to just re-model it from scratch out of proper solids.  It'll take me several hours minimum, but at least I'll be moving forward instead of banging my head against the wall trying to figure this out.

 

If there's an easy way to do what I'm describing, then I haven't found it.  Thanks for reading.

The original geometry is poor quality with a lot of gaps.

Can you request the original SolidWorks files rather than STEP?

Hi!

 

For making changes in the model , first, you will need to turn it into a solid.

 

... but, to turn it to a solid, you must have all the surfaces needed to make a closed object, and work as a closed boundary to "encapsulate"the solid inside that boundaries.

 

The issue is, your composite is very bad, there are lot's of surfaces missing, so you can not turn it to a solid unless you create all the missing surfaces.... it's a loooooot of work
...can you ask for a new and better exported model?

So - I could spend a lot of time repairing it, or just rebuild it myself.  Either of which will take a considerable amount of time.  I'm going to go the 'rebuild' route.  Once completed, I'll have it forever and if I need to modify it again down the road, I'll have a proper model that I can manipulate easier.

 

Yeah - It's been my experience that customer-supplied models are almost always dodgy in some way or another...

If we eliminate the screws, the rest of the structure will be faster.

You can do a mix of repairing + rebuild.
After the solid is ready, is easy to add your modifications using "direct" tool.
Maybe i would do the mix option.


But you are also right, after rebuild from the scratch, it will be easier to make a parametric model and change it will parameters, instead of direct editions.

Tip: you can do use Frame generator to build the structure based in a wire sketch and using standard profiles.

Anyway.... it demands some hours of work.

Get native SolidWorks files or use only as reference in recreating from scratch.

This one is a mess.
