How to update an assembly

I have an assembly which is a compound of sub-assemblies.  I notice a discrepancy between (for example) levels of two base plates.  I change the relevant PART  to adjust and fix the discrepancy.  In my understanding, updating the top-level assembly should update everything through the levels.  Is that correct?

Also, how do I update the top-level assembly without closing and re-opening it?

Go to Manage -> Update -> Rebuild all.

Also, there is the Update button on the tool bar  which lights up when there are updates available.  This does not do a full rebuild, but is much quicker and should do what you are asking.
