how to open an stp file in Autodesk Inventor with default options of windows

we have just installed The Autodesk 2016 Suite with Inventor 2016  on our computers. some users when they right click on a stp file and try to open it with a right click and select "open with" they are not able to open the file with inventor or when they browse to Inventor shortcut or the Inventor program they are still not able to open the stp file with Inventor. we only have inventor 2016 installed. Inventor 2014 has been uninstalled. we can still open stp files within Inventor 2016, but not by right clicking the stp file and selecting open with. Does anybody have any idea how to resolve this issue. I have several users who would be greatlful to a solution to this. My E-mail is seandulac@westerntrailer.com Thank you for your help with this.

Step files are not associated to Inventor.  In Windows you have to create an association of that file type extension to Inventor.    Also when you say they browse for a program and select Inventor, what happens?   Any messages?  In addition Inventor 2016 has the ANYCAD function build into it and importing STEP files are slightly done differently now.

All processes you describe work just fine on my computer..

#1 have you installed all updates/service packs for Inventor?

#2 Could be a permissions issue... Have you tried logging into those computers with users with "admin" rights?

Have the users that can get it to work to log into a computer that doesn't and see if it works then.. (would point to a rights issue again)

#3 Have you tried a clean uninstall and reinstall on those computers?

Anything else you can think that is specific to those users or their computers?

when you right click and select open with and then choose default program It is not available to open with inventor, and even when you browse to the inventor shortcut or the inventor program itself it will not open the file. It does not show an error message either and nothing appears on the screen. Also if you open default programs and select associate a file type and select stp file and select change program to try to open with inventor you get the same results. I have tried other computers with the same install and I can open the file with no problem. Thanks for your help with this

If it was me I would not try to open a step file with the Right click.

Option 1

Open Inventor, select open file, Change the file type to Step Files

Select the step file you want to open. A Import dialog will open and give you many options on how you want to open the step file.

Option 2

Open Inventor and start a new iam file.

Select Place imported CAD Files

You will not have to change the file type on this option. Select your step file and open

You will get the same Import Dialog that is with option 1.

If that does not work. Then copy the stp file here and I will try to open it. It might be a bad step file?
