I am trying to create a sketch on my model. (basically drawing up my fixture on the bottom face of my model so can program it within the same page)

but not sure how to do it are there any videos explaining this?

thanks in advance!

Your question is confusing to me because it seems like such a simple answer but I suspect there are some important details that we aren't receiving.  Maybe you are just the machinist and have never used Inventor to actually model geometry before.

To create a sketch on a model simply open the part, select the "Start 2D Sketch" command from the 3d model tab and select the bottom face of your model as the sketch plane.

First video I found on creating a sketch..

and if you are new to Inventor modeling and want a quick start to begin learning TFI has great videos on that..

@mcgyvr  Yes sounds very easy.. i know how to sketch and whatever.. make a model for basic things.

currently trying to make a layer not connected to the part that i can just switch on and off so i can see exactly where my boundary's are. as when just sketch on top of the part it basically stays there and gets in the way and i have to calculate my tool paths again

I still don't fully understand..

Are you maybe asking about how to create a workplane offset from this bottom face to create your sketch on?

Can you show an image of why simply sketching on the bottom plane isn't working or causes problems?

Or maybe you just want to create a new part with just this sketch and create an assembly and then you can enable/disable that part if you want?

I use the cam functionality all the time and I don't see how any sketch gets in the way but you can always just right click on a sketch and select "suppress" or check "visibility" to turn that sketch off.

Any fixtures/vice/hold downs I model as their own parts and create an assembly and then do the cam programming to that assembly.

i found the problem.. you just draw what you want and move the 'End of part' above selected lines/sketch's

Yes that is another way to suppress or remove a sketch from a part.

That works as long as the sketch you want is at the bottom of the browser tree.

If you want to remove one thats got other features below it I think you should try "suppress" or even "Visibility" like I stated above.
