How to change default lighting?

My default lighting has in some strange way been set to "Grey room" which is totally useless. I would like to get back the "Two Lights" as before. How can I change the default settings?

Thanks for any help!

View tab and select the lighting style you want from the "Appearance" section of the view tab in the Lighting style dropdown box..

You can change that in your template file(s) too so new files will default to what you want..

There is also tools..document settings..standard tab in the "active lighting style" dropdown..

Do you refer to the file "C:\Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\Inventor 2019\Design Data\lighting.xml"? I have not found any default settings in that document?

Did you read my post above?

There is no need to access the xml files.. You can select/change the "default" for all new parts and assemblies by opening those template files and changing the lighting style and saving the template..  Are you aware of and know how to modify template files in Inventor? Template files are the file you pick when you start a new part (standard.ipt, standard.iam,etc....)

The location of your template files is listed in your project file or at the top of the "new" dialog box..

Any already created files will need to be manually changed by going to the view/appearance section and picking the desired lighting style..

I am seeing the same thing,  i have had "2 lights" active in all parts for about a year now.

as of yesterday everything i open is briefly set to "2 lights" and then changes to "grey room" manually changing everything back to "2 lights" every single time i open them is taking up too much of my time.

these are existing parts that have been changed without my input. the change is global.

is there a global setting somewhere?

After having this same problem happen to me today and the responses not actually solving the problem I decided to dig deaper into it bacause it is extreamly annoying. I was able to solve the lighting problem.

I stopped having most of the problem after I purged the lighting settings:

1, Open a new or existing part doc. ( I did it in a new one)

2, View, under Appearance, open the drop down lighting list, Settings, under lighting, rightclick on "Grey Room" and click purge style.

My default is still stuck at Grey Room for some dumb reason but my models are no longer a solid black  un viewable object.

Hope this can help.

@mcgyvridentified three places to modify the lighting.  Summary:  By setting your styles and templates you can assure that all future files will take the desired lighting that you select and for old files you need to reset manually.  I have found a fourth location that deals with lighting.

I noted with interest that whenever I start a new part, the lighting style is initially Grey Room for a brief moment until the template styles override it to my selected Two Lights.

I examined the Application Options XML file and noted that there is a place under Display where there is an attribute "EnvironmentLightSource" which is set to "GreyRoom".  This "implies" that there is a way to change your Application Options to select a default lighting style.  The likely place is under the Settings ... button on the Display tab but there is nothing there (Inventor 2018).  Thus, I see no way to change it except by editing the XML file (not ideal).

Regardless, the selected lighting style in the part/ass'y template should override this lighting BUT this Application Options setting COULD be related to some of the occurrences discussed above wherein a restart of Inventor cured the situation.

YES! THIS IS SO ANNOYING I had the same problem and I fixed it easily, Just change your template file like the mcgyvr says, templates are here,

 C:\Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\Inventor(version number)\Templates

That folder contains regular part .ipt drawing .dwg files which are used every time you click new part or drawing.

Just open the template like any other inventor file and change the active lighting style to whatever you want then save the template and it will be the new default, WHOO!
