How fast is your Inventor PC really?

Hi guys,

We have had to do some testing on a bunch of Inventor PC's recently to determine which of the PC's needs to be replaced. Obviously we needed to find out which of the PC's are the worst eprformers as there was only budget to replace 50% of the design PC's. So we thought the Darwin theory will come in handy right... 🙂

Anyways I started searching on the net for toppics on how to benchmark an Inventor PC. Then I thought whats the point of using gaming benchmark tools because Inventor is not a game and there are more aspects than just graphics performance when it comes to percieved performance on an Inventor PC right.

So we decided to create our own Inventor benchmark tool which tests various aspects of an Inventor PC to give us an overview of our PC's performance. This then helped us make a decision as to whcih pc's to replace.

We have made the tool available free of charge to anyone interested in checking how their PC stacks up to their peers or friends. 🙂

Please download it here and post your results here as well if you want. Would be interesting to see what beast workstations are out there.

I would like to say thanks to Kirk #karthur1, for helping in testing the app.

Please feel free to send any suggestions our way. There is an email link in the app.

Download and Install

The application will work with Inventor 2014 to 2016 only.

IMPORTANT: After installation there will be an Inventor Bench icon on your desktop that looks like this: 32x32.png

My resluts:

HP Elitebook 8560w with an SSD upgrade.

Hi all - important update, there's a new version of InvMark available which resolves an issue I was being informed about which caused some people to be unable to upload to the leaderboard after running InvMark.  InvMark v1.3

The "Files Modified" issue is also resolved, this was a timezone thing.

Can anyone who has downloaded a previous version, please uninstall that through control panel, then install the new version (v1.3).

There is one remaining issue that I'm aware of that we're working on, this will result in a future update soon.

Rather than communicate with people on an extremely slow loading forum which feels like its getting slower, I'm doing all that over on Discord.  If you'd like to join the InvMark Discord server, the link is https://discord.gg/ev7efC85sr

Capturar.PNGHello Users
I did this test.
The configuration of my computer looks good, but the results in the Inventor Bench are terrible. Would anyone know to tell me why?

Thanks

Your CPU is ten years old. Not all 6c/12t and 24gb systems are the same. Capture.PNG

Hi @Anonymous,

In addition to what has already said above,

The main issue is the age of your platform.

The Xeon is 10 years old, which is extremely old for a computer, whilst each generation tends to be 5% faster than the last when the age becomes this big there have been seismic changes. Even the Silicon itself is 32nm which is gigantic compared to the 14nm on intel and even small on AMD.

Because of the age of your platform, you are also running DDR3 at 1333 MHz. Most newer platforms can run RAM at DDR4 2933MHz or above which is a significant speed difference.

The GPU could actually be alright for Inventor since it uses GDDR5 memory and whilst there are faster VRAM out there the GPU isn't used much inside Inventor with only the VRAM really mattering in regards to the GPU. Although 4GB is not much however should be fine for small assemblies.

Okay. Thanks for reply.

So is there anything I can do to improve using this platform?
A new workstation is out of my budget at the moment.

No not really.  Anything you do to that computer would be a waste of money.

Forget buying a 'workstation'.

For $600-$1000 you could have a PC that's blow your computer out of the water and score a 10-12 on the benchmark.

@Anonymous Just to add to @tgregory3G7FA,

That CAD Killer is an absolute beast, Neil has recently supercharged it with a 5800X which has been very high on the InvMark leaderboard. So if you get a 5800X at a decent price it will be so much better than your current system at a very decent price.

To add to that, an AMD 5600X system is at spot #4 on the Invmark leader board. So any 5000 series AMD Ryzen cpu is a good Inventor cpu, the higher you go the better your multitasking will likely be though.

The nice thing about this build, if you don't have the funds for a 5800, you can start with a 3600.  Or even a Ryzen 3 3200 would be far superior.  And it's an easy upgrade to the 5800 in the future.

You could also probably be fine with your existing graphics card and SSD drive and save a few $$$ there.

BTW @Anonymous is this Inventor computer for business use or personal use?  If business, the question is, with a score of 5, how can you afford not to upgrade?

I have a similar build but it looks lime you have a mechanical hard drive. The cheapest thing you could do is getting an ssd an reinstall windows on that ssd. But you probably get just a few points in the score. Something about 9. However it will be a better experience.

Hi Mario,
Thanks for your comment.
I already installed an ssd and formatted the computer.
But even so, the result is insignificant.
Anyway, I appreciate your tip.

I am really disappointed with the results of this app. It doesn't make any sense to me, look at these results. The first of a Dell T5810 Xeon 2.4GHz core 10/20 32RAM DDR4 workstation manufactured in 2016 with a ridiculous score of 6.46 and the other of an ordinary computer with a 1.6GHz i5 processor without a dedicated GPU with a result greater than 9 points. Isn't that strange? What is the realism of these tests. Can someone help me understand please?30-04-2021_Inventor_Bench_T5810.jpeg11-12-2020_Inventor_Bench_Lucas.JPG

It makes sense.  Your CPU is using older architecture.  A 2016 CPU vs a 2019 CPU

Your CPU only has a boost clock of 3.4ghz.  The i5 boosts to 4.2ghz. That's a huge difference.

Your CPU only supports DDR4-2133.  The i5 supports DDR4-2666.

Inventor isn't heavily dependent on the GPU.

The i5 was tested with a much lower graphics resolution.

You should try the new benchmark.  It might give more insight to where you're system is lacking

It make sense to me. On cpubenchmark.net your laptop processors scores 33% better than your xeon workstation. However, your xeon workstation will be better for multi-thread loads such a rendering or FEA.

The results you have just confirms how bad your workstation is at running Inventor. Sorry

Hi, Many thanks for the reply. Do you think it is possible to change some settings on my workstation to improve the result in Inventor?

You'll have to get Inventor 2021 to use InvMark, that was a 2020 test.

No there's not much you can do to improve it.

Have you, in the last few years, vacuumed your cpu cooler or put new thermal past on your CPU?

I would use CPUZ & HWMonitor to check that your CPU and ram are working at full speed. Check the CPU temps and make sure it's not overheating and throttling.

Have you installed lots of software over the years that can be removed? Lots of background running processes that can be eliminated?

There is not much to do.

You could change the CPU. Right now you have a 10 cores with relatively low clock speed, it's not so good for Inventor. You could buy a used E5-1650 v4 that have 6 cores clocked higher. You probably could sell your old CPU for the same price.

I think you would see a difference in Inventor but to be honest, I am not sure it's worth the trouble unless you like messing with computer hardware.
