Hole Pattern on sloped surface

Hi all

 

Can someone please let me know where i'm going wrong. we have Inventor 2014

 

I have a Sheet Metal part rolled spigot with the front face cut on a 1:16 slope. We then need to drill a series of holes around is keeping all the holes 15 mm from the sloped face (Work Plane1). Each hole should also be drilled parallel to the rear face (XZ Plane). 

as the hole pattern goes around the spigot the hole don't keep parallel to the rear face (XZ Plane).

I know you can use the fold/unfold but the issued with this is that in the top level assembly the Component Pattern would not would and I would need to insert each bolt.

 

I have attached the spigot and also an image of the top and bottom with the bolts.

I will have a close look at SDP. Initially I thought - you are talking about pattern on a sketch level.

@IgorMir : I didn't try another setup. Perhaps not all features are changing from themselves, but the main benefit would be a trustable refold without a chance for flipping and - of course - the SDP.

Hi Guys,

 

I have taken a look at this case closely and checked various workflows. Indeed, I don't think Inventor has the ability to create such patterned hole or cut-out in the desirable orientation. The issue here is mainly due to lack of orientation control in the Rect Pattern command. I am sorry I don't have a better solution for this case.

The solution you presented in Spigot.zip is very nice. But, the holes no longer remain cylinder after Refold. I could not find a good solution to keep the cylindrical hole and also oriented properly. This is why I said there was no good solution.

Regarding the Refold flipping issue, I have seen a few cases, particularly when there is no planar reference (cone and cylinder). This can happen in Refold and Cut Normal. The workaround right now is to add a planar portion to the body before Unfold. Create an extrusion or thicken to a distance. Then Unfold could have a reliable planar reference to begin with. Refold would behave more predictably.

Surely it's not possible having cylindrical holes both in folded and flattened situation. Only one geometry - in most cases on the flattened part in reality - is being so, that's normal.

Hi Johnson,

Let's not loose the focus of the exercise. It is not a problem to create a part with holes axes parallel to the XY plane. The problem is in inability to use Feature pattern on Assembly level for controlling the follow up bolts insertion. Because the parameters of a pattern in Unfolded stage of the part are not accessible on an assembly level. Which is understood. But using an array of holes on folded model puts axises of the holes in wrong direction. They are not parallel to the XY plane. And the Flat pattern of such part is unusable.  In assembly file array of bolts looks wrong as well.

As you have said before - there is a lack of how the centre of array is controlled. Walter offered a solution (which I still am not able to reproduce) but it looks like  a heavy duty workaround ruther than a solution. Which requires Walter's level of expertise to come up with!
