File name truncated when switching file type

Hello

so as the title says some of our files get truncated when switching file type while saving as , f.e.

save as -> Bauteil14.0001.ipt

switch to file type all(*)

Bauteil14.0001

switch to file type .ipt

Bauteil14.ipt

as we are using project names like 00.12.44.00 and so on this is a bit of a problem .

Already tried "hide known file extensions" in windows 10 doenst help .

Besides it also affects Windows 7 machines with 2018 inventor version .

Havent tried if it also affects 2016 versions as we have a few of those also .

I dont think this is windows related as other software doesnt seem to have the issue .

Any help apreciated .

Hi! This is a mystery to us. We heard sporadic reports of this behavior. However, we cannot reproduce it ourselves. We have heard some customers resolved the issues by installing all critical Windows updates.

This could be .Net related. Not happening to other applications may not mean it is only Inventor's issue. Not all applications rely on the latest .Net version. Please make sure proper .Net versions are installed (2018 requires .Net 4.6 and 2019 requires .Net 4.7). Also all critical Windows updates are installed.

Many thanks!

Hello , thank you for your quick response .

Windows is kept uptodate .

Howerver i will double check and  look into which NET version is being used maybe there are multiple and a mismatch occurs .

I will come back with the results .

It occured to me that i should maybe check if there is a bad entry for the net version in inventor , as we are using roaming profiles and some computers use win 7 some 10 some inventor 2016 and so on ... that a profile specific registry entry could cause this ? could you point me to the registry path where inventor 2018 has the nets entry or is this setting stored in a different way ?

We do use versioned profiles but maybe some havoc happend as i read that 2012r2 server experiences some bugs with switching between win 7 and 10 profile versions

does inventor 2018 explicitly need NET 4.6 or does it work with higher versions also ?

This problem keeps coming up on these forums with various reasoning's as to what is the method leading up to his issue.  The common denominator always seems to be when dots or period are used in the middle of the file name, the OS seems to get confused on where to truncate the filename.  Reason being is the period or dot is used as a separator between the actual filename and the extension.  I use _ or - between the parts of my filename and have NEVER had this issue.

Windows 10 x64 -16GB Ram
Intel i7-6700 @ 3.41ghz
nVidia GTS 250 - 1 GB
Inventor Pro 2018

I understand the issue , but your answer is a NON-ANSWER. We cannot change thousend of project names and nested file/folder names and who knows what as the whole project structure works years with this naming convention 45.12.34... As i also work as a part time software developer and this seems to me as poor programming  if it is not a .NET dependency mismatch error (Reasoning: someone just used some predefined string cut method with delimter "." not taking into account that dot can be in the filename also , correctly the file name extension as a whole should be token to truncate else  nothing should be truncated this clearly doesnt happen ) . So be reasonable with your suggestions .

P.S. Besides you cant expect software users to adapt to buggy implementation not blaming autodesk as im unsure where the actual string parsing happens. Or if there is a double truncation call for some weird reason.

@johnsonshiue Johnson, This is easily repeatable for me  (and a couple other computers here) and I'd be happy to allow you access to my machine to see if you can figure it out..

I am fully up to date on Windows updates..

Running .NET version 4.7.03056

Inventor 2019.1.2

This same process was tested on various other software including Autocad, 3DSMax, Word, Excel,etc... and NONE of them show the same "bug" as Inventor does..

Hi Brian,

I need to check with the project team on the issue. Something is wrong but we need to able to reproduce it persistently.

Many thanks!

@j.r.flucher JR.. Please try the same process but DO NOT type in the file extension and see if that is a suitable workaround

So try this..

save as --> Bauteil14.0001 (File type is still set on ipt and it will save as ipt without you typing in ipt)

switch to file type all(*)

Bauteil14.0001

switch to file type .ipt

Bauteil14.0001.ipt

The "bug" seems to happen when you type .ipt initially.. If you don't then it does not truncate when switching file types..

@johnsonshiue Johnson.. I'm going to assume you didn't type in the file extension initially thats why you aren't able to duplicate it..

See screencast..

Hi Brian,

I still cannot reproduce it using the exact steps in the video. One thing to confirm is that, are you running any other add-in not included in initial install? I have contacted the project team and the team is able to reproduce it. However, there isn't a solution yet unfortunately.

Many thanks!

@johnsonshiue The only non-default Inventor addins I'm running are addins related to Inventor HSM cam program

I do not type in the file extension manually or initially if you select a file the fileextension is also copied over . I dont do anything with the file name i just switch file type to save as . first time its ok second time it truncates the name ...

Im going to do tomorrow a full reinstall of Ultimate suite 2018 on a win 7  - 64x  with  .NET 4.7 preinstalled while all registry entries related to autodesk products of this or previous versions were purged on the maschine and user profile.

When you save the the pdf into a folder, do any of the subfolder names have over 40 or 50 characters? I just tried to print to pdf into a folder that the project's folder name was 80 characters and the pdf was truncated to 6 characters. After I copied the file to my c drive documents, the name was complete, including the extra (1).
