EXTRUDE ERROR ON PART

I have this part file and as you can see in the image it says there is an error with the extrusion. No effect but the extrusion is there like expected.
What is going on here.
I attached the part as well

I didn't see why it was reporting an error, but I might use Shell instead.  (See Attached)

My guess is that as you are extruding back into the casing,  Inventor does not like the fact that the closed outer profile of your sketch does not generate a new feature as it totally enveloped by the casing wall.

Hi Anthony,

I also could not figure out why it would give you an error. The only thing I can think of is that you are creating an extrusion which overlaps with an existing solid which in essence is the same solid.... Although if you create the extrusion from a new sketch placed on the bottom face with a projected profile, then it has no issue, even if you extrude into the existing solid body. And if you change the original extrusion which was part of the bronze colored body, to be a body on its own, the issue also goes away. Weirder and weirder....

I agree with JD Mather on using Shell instead but you probably have a good reason for doing what you did. It would be good to let us know the answer if you ever find it.

Greetings

Hi Anthony,

I think there is some sort of corruption. Inventor probably holds on to a wrong reference to the solid body. If you change the Extrusion from Join to Cut, the error will go away. This is opposite to what should have happened. Actually, the Join does add material, while Cut does not.

Many thanks!

Yes there are ways to get around it but this means that there is a problem with Inventor

Yeah like you say this is weird.
I love using the same sketch as it makes for less info and things stay accurate.
I've done the exact same thing on other multibody parts and its been fine.
Here I thought I need to alert the Inventor team to see if its a program error and they can fix it

So you think there is a problem in the software?

Actually, I would model the entire design very differently utilizing the BORN Technique as much as possible and practical.

JD Please tell me what is the BORN method
Message 11 of 17

Hi Anthony,

Yes, I believe this is a bug. There isn't anything wrong with the modeling approach. Also, the geometry checks clean. I cannot see why Inventor complains the Extrude Join is a null op. Something is wrong indeed. I suspect it is either Body Manager got confused or there is a corrupted feature hiding behind the scene.

Many thanks!

@AnthonyHarris90842

If I create an example - are you going to stick around?

(I am getting a little irritated with those who ask questions and then abandon their discussions after I have spent time working up example.)

Hi JD

You probably seen a number of my post here about Inventor and its my livelihood and I am on the Inventor Beta test team so yes I want to know as much as I can about Inventor and clever work processes.
I will really appreciate your effort.

Good to hear.
I am working on it a little bit at a time as time permits.

@AnthonyHarris90842

I got a bunch of work dumped on me that I have to complete first - but this looks like a fun little project and I want to show example.

If you don't hear anything back on my progress by next Mon - bump this back to the top.

I think you will like my "solution".
