I have tried the evoluent mouse and found it harder to work with. It was hard to get a firm grip (kind of slip out of hand) and the fact that you hold the mouse high above the table it decreased my precision to move it around. Bear in mind that I have ALL my mouses (mices) set to maximum speed so I can be on both screens fast with as little movement as possible.
I do have a trackball similar to yours Aaron but it's the Logitech M570. It's faster for work in general except for AutoCAD.
Nothing beats the regular mouse for AutoCAD from a speed point of view, especially with the 2 thumb buttons set to Enter and Escape. I have always used 3 fingers on the mouse: Index finger on click, middle on wheel, ring finger on right click ...etc. For AutoCAD stuff I still use the Roccat Kone XTD, just for speed (I do a lot of P&ID's)
I have a palm type of grip and so I love a large mouse but the down size of the M570 trackball (any trackball for that matter) is that they need cleaning up ALL THE TIME. Smallest dust particle makes the pointer jump and hard to work with. I have been searching everywhere and can't find a trackball with pad instead of ball (trackpad?, touchball? padball? 🙂 ), that way I don't need to clean it all the time. I was hopping that the tactile pad (tactile ball) would solve the problem.
The CAD Mouse from 3dConnexion didn't inspire me but that's just me (read my comments here on design and motion).
Home I use a Logitech G602 mouse but there are some good clones on Amazon now, a lot cheaper too (wish I knew that earlier).
Here are my stats on mouse usage: In about 5 hours of design time, I can squeeze out of a normal day, I get around ~5000 clicks and ~3500 scrolls.
@Anonymous: where about are you located? maybe I can get one of my colleagues to send you a second hand one for review. I bet there's one that they don't use sitting around here somewhere.
