Embedded Excel bug?

I think this is a bug, but wanted to see if anyone else can reproduce it.  If you have an embedded excel sheet in a part that controls parameters there can be some issues with updating the part.  I'll try to explain the problem but it might be easier to look at the screencast.

Edit the embedded excel sheet and change one of the parameters.  Save the excel file and close it.  The update button should be lit up now but it isn't, you have to edit a feature to update the part.  If you don't save the excel file it works like I would expect.

Hi Andrew,

Based on the description, it does sound like a bug to me. Another possibility it can happen is that the link beftween the Excel sheet and the particular parameter is broken. Duplicated name or prior empty cell. Please share the file here or send it to me directly (johnson.shiue@autodesk.com). I would like to understand the behavior better.

Many thanks!

I can actually make it happen on any part that has an embedded excel sheet.  Here is a simple one that exhibits the behavior.

Hi Andrew,

I must be missing something. when I edit the embedded spreadsheet and change LENGTH value, the lightning bolt does light up. I am on 2020.2 update.

Many thanks!

I'm also on 2020.2.  If you edit the spreadsheet and then save it in excel, then close it the update button is grayed out in Inventor.  It only happens after you save the excel file.

Hi Andrew,

Do you have "UseLibXL" variable set to 1? If yes, you need to remove it to perform the Excel parameter linking workflow.

Many thanks!

No I don't have that variable set.  I can still edit the excel sheet, if I had that variable I wouldn't be able to do that.

I have also found this issue over here.  After I uninstalled 2020.2 it seems to work as intended, I do not have 2020.1 installed.

Hi Andrew,

Unfortunately, I am not yet able to reproduce the behavior. If you uninstall 2020.2 update, does it work?

Many thanks!

After reinstalling 2020.2 the issue described in the original post returns, so it is definitely a bug in the new update.

I'm not sure if there has been any progress on this issue, but I've installed 2020.2.1 and it is still a problem.

I also had this problem in 2020.2.2  Reverting to 2020.1.1 fixed it

I can reproduce it with Excel 2007 with Inventor 2020.2.

Note that even if the lightning bolt doesn't light up to prompt you to update, Manage-Rebuild All works correctly.

Can you please clarify which version of Excel you are seeing this issue with ?

Thanks

Chris

Ok Thanks. This has been addressed in our internal 2021 build - we'll do some further investigations to see if it can be back-ported for the 2020.3 update.

Not sure if this is the same issue but I am having an issue with iParts/Excel. When editing iPart via spreadsheet Inventor for some reason does not think Excel has been closed. After saving and exiting or even just exiting without save. I am unable to edit my part just like if I were to have the iPart excel file still open. Only after I hit 'Esc' will then inventor display the 'The Excel process will now be terminated...' dialog box.
