Elliptical Tube in Frame Generator

Hi all,

I have a part that I'm having trouble with, I authored it as a structural shape and published it into the content centre. It just happens to be an elliptical tube, so I sketched an ellipse and then offset it for the wall thickness and extruded it etc.

When I try to place it in an assembly it errors, but other parts I create work fine, it seems to be the ellipse that is causing the failure, I ended up resorting to drawing out an ellipse manually (Stretching the memory banks from tec drawing at school), and this works fine.

Attached are the two files the first with the non-working ellipse and the second .v2 version is the manually drawn ellipse.

I've potentially done something weird with the first version, but I can't figure it out.

There is a clue when you author the part as a structural shape the elliptical version doesn't have a preview in the selection window.

I've attached a good PDF on publishing items for Frame Gen. The scan quality isn't the greatest (file was given to me).

Hi,

As suggested by @imadHabash I started a new thread in the Inventor Forum, Link: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-forum/elliptical-tube-in-frame-generator/m-p/7519528#M666830

Is there a way you can delete threads accidentally posted in the wrong forum?

@blair I have authored and Published into CC quite a few parts for use with Frame Generator so I'm familiar with the process. It just seemed that for some reason it wouldn't work with that elliptical sketch in the first attachment.

Thanks for taking a look, perhaps to keep everyone happy we should continue the discussion in the Inventor Forum.

OK, generally most people are new at publishing frame gen items.

The only way to delete a post, would be to flag it as "unappropriated" for the forum moderator with a note explaining the reason such as "duplicate post" or "wrong forum".

thanks,

Oh it appears a moderator has already moved this thread for me, so I guess we are fine to continue, please ignore the link above, and I will go about getting it removed.

Anyway is there a way you could download the files attached in the OP (They are already authored) and try publishing them to your CC to see if you get a similar result? I guess I should remodel the elliptical version from total scratch just to be super sure.

Kind regards,

Shaun

I'll see how my day goes tomorrow. I'm away from my work computer that contains Inventor.

It's no rush, I found a suitable workaround (the .v2. file) it was more
just a curiosity thing, like have I done something wrong or not.

Hello @shaun I see that you are visiting as a new member to the Inventor Forum.
Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

I went through and authored the ellipse shape by normal means just fine. It will select all the way through Frame Generator (though with no preview), go through frame naming, but errors at placement saying "could not be located in the Content Center library."

I authored v2 and it works no problem.

This might be a limitation with the ellipse as a profile method with Frame Generator. I'll keep looking around my end.

It appears you got it to work with the geometry drawn ellipse which is a bit of a headache but reasonable workaround for the repeat frame generator use.

Hi @kelly.young

Yes, that's exactly the same as what I was seeing, I wanted to cross check things before I started asking if this is a limitation in the software or not. did you see when you click the 'Structural Shape' authoring button there is no preview at that early stage as well? Maybe that's a clue.

Thanks for taking a look.
