All versions of Vault provide the following basic services:
- Central storage of Inventor Files
- Can be configured to keep a copy of a file each time it is checked into Vault
- Check-in generates a "Version" of a file
- Administrators can purge various historical versions
- Vault Workgroup and Professional can leverage Lifecycles as part of a purge process.
- Database that tracks the parent-child relationships between various Inventor files
- Database that tracks which user has an active edit permission on a file
- Tools to inform users if their local copy of a file is the latest from Vault, or has a newer version that needs to be downloaded to their local hard drive
- Tools to copy entire designs to new files.
- A backup utility to capture both the Inventor files and all the database and user information spanning the history of the Vault
Vault Workgroup and Professional add some additional features.
- Categories: Administrator defined classes of design files. Vault can assign files to different Categories at initial check-in. Different Categories can have different Lifecycles, Revision Schemes, and other various features. Vault can use Categories to limit what files or folders that individual users or groups of users can see.
- Lifecycles: These Vault objects track the state of a file as it moves through a company's design process. These supersede the Inventor "Design State" iproperity. These are typically customized for each category and company. Administrators create Lifecycles and define the possible transitions from one stage to another. The Job Processor can be configured to create .pdf, .stp, or other output files based on Lifecycle state changes. Various Stages can be configured to prevent editing by users.
- Revision Schemes: Vault Revisions superseded the Inventor "Revision" iproperity. The schemes define the starting letter or number and the sequence of letters/numbers.
When a Vault Basic user checks-out a file, they have edit permission and other users do not. Once the file is checked in, other users can download the new version and check it out at any time. Vault Workgroup and Professional can apply Categories and Lifecycle States to keep users from editing files without starting a formal revision process.
