creating a 2d spiral

i would appreciate some advice on how to creating a 2D spiral sketch.

If you're trying to create a 3D spiral from a 2D sketch, investigate the coil tool first. It'll create a flat spiral from a axis and
a shape that defines the X-section.

The only other way I can think of is by using a spline and defining points. By dimensioning the defining points and linking the
defining point to an excel spreadsheet you should be able to create a spiral. But I don't know the Cartesian equations for a spiral.

As Duncan said, use the coil feature and select spiral option.
If you need a 2D spiral, create a spiral section and project an edge onto a new sketch, then suppress the feature.

The dependant sketch is suppressed with the feature, so perhaps reducing the section dimensions after the spiral is created will suffice?

Instead of suppressing the feature, you can use Delete Face feature and
select Delete Lump option. In this way the feature dependency is maintained
but the body will be gone.

Why not a 3D intersection of a spiralled surf and an Origin Plane?

->3D Sketch ->equation curve

x(t)=t*sin(t)

y(t)=t*cos(t)

z(t)=0

t min: 0   t max: 720    <-units are degrees

 

This will create a spiral with 2 rotations.

Obviously you can modify these equations to fit your specific needs, for instance if you want the curve diameter smaller you could do this:

x(t)=t*sin(t)/2

y(t)=t*cos(t)/2

z(t)=0

 

or if you want to shift the curve in a certain direction you can do this

x(t)=t*sin(t)+10

y(t)=t*cos(t)

z(t)=0
