Check in failure - Surface texture outside defined search path

Currently we have the following problem with a large number of (weld)assembly files. I'm not completely sure if I'm posting this in the right category, because it's a combined Inventor/Vault problem, but I believe the main problem lies with Inventor.

First of all let me start with the error message that we receive. After we checked out an old assembly from the Vault and we try to check it back in we sometimes get the following error message:

Your files could not be added tot the vault for the following reasons:

The file 'C:\Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\Inventor 2013\Textures\surfaces\weldcat0.bmp is outside the defined search paths...

Screenshot 2017.06.26_200.jpg

However, when I go to my computer, the file and file path is present:

Screenshot 2017.06.26_201.jpg

From this point it gets interesting (and difficult). I believe that this error is being generated because at the beginning of this year we've upgraded our servers and all computers had to login into a new domain. Also together with this upgrade we switched from Inventor 2013 to Inventor 2017 (just to be complete on information, I don't think switching to a newer version is related to the problem). Somehow logging into the new domain causes the link to the texture files not to be recognized.

I also tried all solutions as suggested in the following posts, but those solutions didn't work either:

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-forum/textures/td-p/4371008

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/inventor-products/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcartic...

Currently we are manually removing the link to this texture using Tools => Links => Break link. However this is a very tedious solution, especially for large assemblies because an error message is generated, but it doesn't say which file is effected, which means you have to go to a large number of files to find the corrupted assembly.

Please provide any further ideas or suggestions. The most annoying part is, that even though a link to the weldcat file is present, it's not visible in the part itself in other words, it's useless to have the link.

Hi! The solution proposed by the following link should work.

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/inventor-products/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcartic...

I assume you followed the instruction but it still  does not work. If that is the case, could you check something real quick? It looks like some of the .bmp files used to be in "C:\Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\Inventor 2013\Textures\" is no longer available. Are they available in "C:\Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\Inventor 2017\Textures\"? If not, can you find those .bmp files and copy them to 2017 public doc folder?

I personally think you might want to consider using the shared texture folder workflow as described in above link.

Many thanks!

Hi Johnson,

Thank you for the reply, but I had already tried that solution and it doesn't work. So here are the screenshots of how I set my system up:

1) Because we use the Vault I've setup a library folder for the Textures: _Application Data\Textures\. And placed the weldcat0.bmp in the Vault:

Screenshot 2017.06.27_204.jpg

2) I've added the Library folder to the project file:

Screenshot 2017.06.27_207.jpg

3) I've changed the Default search path for textures to look at the library folder:

Screenshot 2017.06.27_208.jpg

However when I open the assembly and try to check it in I get the following error message:

Screenshot 2017.06.27_209.jpg

One thing that I also don't understand is that I don't get an error when I open the assembly. I've manually renamed the C:\Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\Inventor 2013\Textures\surfaces\ folder so that it wouldn't be able to find the texture and hopefully try to setup new links, but it doesn't do that.

Screenshot 2017.06.27_210.jpg

I've also tried changing the default search path to the path the file is requesting for and to the Inventor 2017 folder but that doesn't work either (in all cases the folder had the necessary weldcat0.bmp).

Am I still doing something wrong with the setup for creating a Texture library folder as I described first or is there something else I can do?

Hi Johnson,

This link is no longer active and I'm having a similar issue as the post originator. Do you have access the the article you pointed to?
