Cannot grab parts in an assembly file

Hello,

I'm using Inventor 2018 and am having an issue. I was using a file earlier this morning and was able to grab the separate parts in my file. Now however it is only allowing me to choose three. The skid/floor that is grounded. The separating partition for the second level. and the roof of my model.

I'm trying to join two parts together however i am unable to attach them as I cannot grab them. I tried using the model tab with the appropriate part on the RHS of the screen however it is still not allowing me to constrain the parts together as I cannot grab them. I also tried using right click over the object and select other however it is greying the selection out. anybody have this issue before? solutions?

thanks,

craig

Welcome to the Autodesk User's Community..

It's very hard to understand what's going on when you only provide words.  Screen shots would help or even an Autodesk Screencast showing your issue.

sorry as I would like to be able to do that. However I can't due to the information clause that the company I work for has me signed. Designs are not to be shared verbally or thru pictures to others. I definitely agree with you however that if i was able to that this would be much easier and quicker.

Whenever something does not work as expected, you should restart Inventor.
If that doesn't work, restart the computer.

So.. can you create a few dummy parts and throw them into an assembly and duplicate the issue there?

Or have you tried other assembly files?

Have you checked to see which "selection filter" you have active?

Are you sure you aren't actively editing an assembly in the context of this one?

Are they all parts and some you can select and others you can't? or maybe only subassemblies can be selected?

Hi Craig,

Could you share a screenshot or a video showing the behavior? On top of my head, there are a few logical reasons you are seeing the behavior. 1) You might be in Express mode. Click on Load Full so the assembly is fully loaded. 2) You are not in assembly environment or you are in an add-in environment. 3) You are editing a subassembly in-place. Or, you are probably seeing a system-level glitch. Try using Inventor Reset Utility (go to All Programs -> Autodesk -> Autodesk Inventor Pro 2018 -> Tools -> Inventor Reset Utility.

Many thanks!

I tried this and I'm thinking of the size of the file is the reason behind the issue at hand but unsure. I did re-create a smaller file and it did not have said issue w/ the assembly. I tried other assembly files (projects at hand) and the issue seems to be following me (slowly there is a lag to the problem i am discussing it seems i have a few moments of inventor where i'm able to grab things and then it dissappears).

The selection filter on right click is grayed out fully w/in the list of commands. I can use the selection portion but when the sub menu pops out it is gray across the board.

I am not editing the assembly itself and not the indivdual parts yes. (Fun fact though because of this note i was able to find a loop hole. I have to double click on each part in the model list as to activate the edit mode for that part then return to the assembly to turn on the part and have access to it again. this takes a while though). Its the only .iam file (those that are not listed as parts numbers from previous sub assemblies) for this particular project under the sole heading required for the job. Yes only particular sub-assemblies can be picked as I was saying in the beginning its only the floor (grounded object) the middle partition (second floor) and the roof of the structure.

but yes you kind of found a solution. Just a run around and a pain to click on everything (parts and sub assemblies) on and off one at a time thru the edit mode.

Sorry there johnsonI cannot. Its a signed agreement I have with my company as not to share any designs (completed or in the works) with others outside the company unless they are specific instructions given to me from our bosses/clients/contractors that we have deemed acceptable to the project on the file. Its over the top yes but confidentiality is a requirement here.

thanks I wish i could be more help with using pictures and videos though. But i will have to try to communicate with the use of words. :s

1) yes tried the full load. No go

2) I look thru the add ins manager and the appropriate add ins are turned on for the company standards for the use of the program.

3)I can try the reset but i will have to wait for IT to confirm the action as the key is not my key. Thanks for the tip i will try this if the problem becomes to hectic.

Hi Craig,

One more thing. Can the parts be selected in the browser but not in the graphics window? If yes, I bet the parts are Disabled. You need to right-click on them in the browser -> check Enable.

Many thanks!
