Can you make decals appear in ray tracing?

I've never rendered decals before. If I click view>ray tracing, all the decals disappear.

They come back when I turn ray tracing off.

Is there a way to render them without using studio?

Are you applying the decals as "decals" ?

It works for me, IV2016...

If it doesn't work for you can you give more details and/or an example file?

Version of Inventor?

and yes have you applied the "decal" feature? (probably not as decals do show in raytraces but only when you have applied them as decals and not just an image inserted into a sketch)

@SharkDesign It "may have" if you had been on the beta team Smiley Wink...

I don't have 2018 so I can't confirm if I'm seeing the same issue..

@Anonymous Johnson can you confirm if this is a bug in 2018 please.. (I have a feeling James is going to keep you really busy now)

I just tried on my home 2018 install, it works there too:

You seem to have quite a few issues with 2018, maybe something went wrong with the install?

Just to make sure, maybe you can post a sample part?

@SharkDesign

And I'll just throw this out there because it does seem you have a few issues that could be graphics related..

Have you installed the latest version for your graphics card driver? Latest from the manufacturers site I mean.. Not from some Autodesk certified list.. (if thats even still maintained)

Or even try switching to "software graphics" and then restarting Inventor and see if decals show and cylinder highlight edges (one of your other findings),etc...

And thanks niels for the confirmation that it can/does work in 2018..

Hi James,

This should work. Could you send me the files directly (johnson.shiue@autodesk.com)? I can try it on my machine immediately and let you know what I find.

Many thanks!

I've partially solved the issue. The part was a multibody and I think maybe the decal was applied to a different solid, but because the outer solid was only 0.5mm thick it appeared to show through it in normal viewing but when rendered was hidden.

However, I now have a new issue. When I render it only renders the first 7 decals and ignores the rest. Is there a limit on how many decals it will render from a single sketch/pattern?

Hi James,

The model does not look too big. Could you send it to me directly (johnson.shiue@autodesk.com)? I would like to understand the behavior better.

Many thanks!

Hi James,

I am able to reproduce the behavior using the files you sent me. Indeed, the some decals are missing when Ray Tracing is enabled. This is a bug. I will work with the project team to understand the behavior better and see what we can do.

Many thanks!

Hello
I'm having the same issue in inventor 2018 but only with some of the decals. I've applied 25 decals and the same 6 (not even the last applied) does not show in ray tracing or renderings in inventor studio no matter what I try to do.

Hi Sebastian,

The issue was reported as INVGEN-2243. Unfortunately, the issue is not resolved yet. I will work with the project team to see if there is further update.

Many thanks!

I don't know if this helps but I found out that the geometry where decals would not be visible, the geometry was sketched using splines so it was curving a bit.
