Can't select individual faces for thicken command on surface

I have an issue where i cant select a separate face for thicken command if its a surface. I can only select an individual face if it is a solid.

Step by step to re-create

• Draw a new solid. A Simple cube will do.
• Delete a single face
• Now try and thicken just a single face, its not possible. It will always select every face, even with the automatic face chain de-selected.

Because of the geometry I am working with, i want to use this specific workflow. Doest anyone have a fix or workaround for this?

I am running Inventor 2022 Pro / Windows 10

Hi Matt, maybe this will help you.

Can't select faces here, like you said.

Changed to Offset and was able to select the face to extend or make a new surface (new surface shown)

Or perhaps this is what you need.

Copy the body as a surface.

Thicken the face and...

new solid!

Thanks Marshall, while they are both workarounds, and i did ask for a workaround , they have an extra step that i didnt need to do in previous versions.

I guess what i was trying to ask, and i didnt do a very good job of explaining, is there any way to make the original intended function work as it used to.

I feel like this is a step backwards with software functionality and would be good if autodesk could fix it.

try selecting it via box-selection

It doesnt let you do box selection. Only "quilt" / all faces selection

i mean: disable both quilt and the automatic selection, then click into the input box to start selecting faces, then drag your mouse over the screen to Box- (or window-) select.

works for me. but defenitly not ideal

It is weird, only a window selection will work in that scenario.

I made a mistake in my first post, i am using 2021 not 2022, and i have tried all the options and cant select it even with a window.
Going back to 2019 was the last version were individual face selection was possible.

Its a bit annoying having this regression in selection capability.

can someone from Autodesk either confirm this is a regression in functionality and is it on purpose or its a new bug introduced in newer versions that needs to be fixed?

Sorry if i skimmed too much, the functionality is there but it requires some clicks to get to.

First off, after selecting the thicken command you need to set it to "offsetsurface" mode at the top.

Then you need to deselect the quilt mode in order to select only faces and lastly make sure "automatic face chain" is unchecked as well.

with these settings "window select" will also work.

Hi! I think this is a bug probably starting from 2020 or 2021. It is indeed inconsistent though. The window-select can pick up one face without a problem. But, mouse-pick just does not work. I will work with the project team to understand the behavior better.
