BOM reordering is confusing

I think this may have a been a problem for a while. I know I've had issues before trying to put the BOM in the right order.

Is this a bug or expected behaviour?

Dragging items from below puts them above, which is expected as shown by the arrow.

However dragging items from above puts them below and I don't know why.

See my screencast below;

When I try and put 5 above 3, I follow the arrow in the graphic and it goes above 3.

And when I try and put 7 above 4 I get the same result.

However, if I move an item down the list...

I move 1 to 5, arrow indicates it will go above 5 but instead it goes below.

Similarly I try to move 2 above 7, but it goes below instead.

This to me is confusing with the way the graphic shows the arrow inserting it above and it goes below.

Is this intended behaviour and for what reason?

Hi! I believe the behavior is similar to the one in the below thread. It should be fixed in the coming update to 2018. When it becomes available, please go ahead download and install it. Let me know if it works better.

Many thanks!

nope, this is a completely different issue.

Their BOM randomises the entire order when they move one thing, mine stays in order.

The problem I am referring to is whether the part is inserted above or below the arrow graphic.

Hi,

It is a little confusing and we may want to consider an icon change but the behavior is the same in several of the releases I tested.

That is if moving the item up and the arrow points to a component it will place the component above it. Like the arrow shows.

When moving an item down in the BOM when the arrow points to a component in the BOM it will place it below that item (not what the arrow infers).

I did find that this was consistent in all of the version of Inventor I checked.

Please let me know if this was useful.

You're right, it's been like this for a while, I thought I was going mad. Only just got round to investigating it recently.

It's annoying.

Hi,

This may be a good candidate to add to the Inventor Ideastation site. As it may be a quick fix if it's not addressed in 2018 R1 release coming soon.
