Hi,

How do I choose where my old version files are being made?

Right now my directories are overflooded by "old versions" maps, I'd like to keep all of my backups in about 3 maps in a much larger directory.

thanks,

As far as I am aware, you can't change this path.  All you can do is set how many old versions to keep (which is a Project File-specific setting).

The OldVersions folders are always created in the folder with the original file.  I clear them out at the end of a project by using a Windows search at the top level of my project's workspace.

Old versions aren't what I'd call backups

We do backups nightly to a server and NAS storage device.

But yes... if you rarely need the old versions (been using Inventor since R8 I think and NEVER used an old versions file) then set the project file options to 0 or a lower number..

If you are concerned about storage space... buy a bigger hard drive..

Then do backups as needed on all cad files.. don't rely on old versions to be your backups..

If your hard drive crashes all the old versions go with it..

Backup to one or more other storage devices..

Our network does full backups each evening. My workstation has a separate hard-drive just for backups that run full backups each night. On top of that I sync my workstation with an external USB drive that I take home to sync my home workstation every day. All workstations have UPS power back-up supplies that level any power fluctuations and allow for proper saving of work.

Before we migrate to the new release of Inventor, all Inventor files are copied and burned to a DVD for archive (who says you can't go back).

I've been using Inventor since release 4 and possibly one time I had to use one of the "Old-Version" files because a file I was working on became corrupt.

Once files/work is finalized, if you change the statue in the iProperties to released and run the Purge function from within the Windows Explorer, it will delete all the Old-Version files that are "completed". This helps clean up the file folders..

The Purge feature..

Cool, I learnt something new, always used a search and delete, via file management tools.

Other than that, I use the Old versions about once a month at least. Sometimes just to check something, very seldom due to corruption, but sometimes to roll back when changes get too big. (I don't have vault)

As for the OP having the oldversions in a central location, well IMO it would be a huge mess trying to manage it.
