Autodesk Inventor AnyCAD DWG Underlay - Third Angle Projection?

I'm just doing a sanity check here - Does AnyCAD DWG Underlay only work in Third angle projection?

I am testing Inventor LT 2017, inserting a DWG from AutoCAD LT 2017. It seems to me that, if I draw in First angle in AutoCAD and reference the DWG into Inventor using AnyCAD DWG Underlay at least one of my views will come in flipped the wrong way round?

I can't see an option to Mirror a DWG Underlay reference to correct this.

The only thing I could think of was to create a new workplane with zero offset from the origin, so that I could reverse it's normal, and place the rogue view on that...

Has anyone else notice this behaviour?

Paul

Hi Paul,

The behavior does not look right to me. Could you send me the dwg file? I would like to work with the project team and understand this behavior better. We should not flip the side arbitrarily.

Many thanks!

Hi Johnson,

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Just to clarify, the side doesn't flip arbitrarily. I think that it's just a product of how first/third angle projection drawn in AutoCAD would naturally map onto the default workplanes in Inventor.

Unless we have an option to 'Flip' the DWG underlay, I don't see how it could be resolved?

Unless I've misunderstood which projections map onto which planes - which could happen 😉 ...

Data set attached.

Paul

Hi Paul,

Thanks for reporting issue to us.

Using your attached DWG to import and translate the three views in Inventor will get the expected result, showing as the snapshots below. Look into the details in your video, I think the root cause is that the original DWG file constaints 'Top+Front+Left' views, and your attached DWG file has been updated to 'Top+Front+Right' views. That's why you do not get the expected result in video and work well in your attached Inventor and DWG files.

Placing the DWG in a new work plane and flip the normal is a nice workaround, and flip the nornal directly in imported DWG is a nice suggestion which will extend Inventor ability to handle different DWG drawing views. I have reported the requirement to internal team and we will prioritize it.

HI Liang.Chen,

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I agree, the original AutoCAD file was drawn in First angle. I noticed that this didn't work as I expected when I referenced it into Inventor, so I swapped the views around in AutoCAD so that they were in Third Angle position.

This was easy to do in AutoCAD but it wouldn't be a great solution if my AutoCAD drawing was more complicated or my company standard was to draw in First Angle.

The ability to 'Flip' the reference would be awesome - thanks for adding the idea to your to do list 😉

P.S. Check this idea out as well!
