Autodesk Inventor 2009 has stopped working - Windows 7 64 Bit

I have recently installed Autodesk Inventor Pro 2009 on my new PC running Windows 7 64 Bit. (about 8 weeks ago) Today I received an error message when attempting to run Inventor. The message window said " Autodesk Inventor 2009 has stopped working" then another windows said " A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close that program and notify you if a solution is available"

Here are a few observations that might help:

The program had been working perfectly.

I had Internet Explorer running a YouTube video in the background has I attempted to start Inventor. I feel like a dummy for doing that even though that may not be the cause.

Also; I had one issue that I think was fixed about 3 or 4 days ago with a patch designed to stop Inventor from asking for new activation codes. I have not had this issue again but I will have to wait a while to see if that patch worked for sure but I think it did.

I saw that this error message can be an issue with different Autodesk programs and operating systems so I thought it would be best to start a new post for this.

Thanks in advance,

Bill

Do you have any kids or grandkids who are students?

Maybe one of them could benefit from you teaching them how to use Inventor.

Hi JD,

No grandchildren, but thanks for the link and the idea. If I can't get going I may ask them if I might qualify being straight forward about it. I can see how it may be possible especially since I have a good history to backup my strictly educational / learning use with my old version. (no big deal either way) Autodesk is very generous with educators and with Fusion 360 and etc.

I want to keep this post alive while I try a few things in the next several days but I now see the reality that it would be hard to say if using Virtualbox an a downgraded OS would work. I may still try it but I now understand that the reason I have this specific issue is probably different than other people and it is likely as you guys pointed out to be because of missing updates. It is strange how it worked then just stopped working but I can tell that you guys have seen this kind of thing before. (( I don't really get computers and software glitches )) I know Windows 7 32 Bit worked fine for me so I might try Virtualbox  using Windows 7 32 Bit unless you or someone else says I should try Vista or XP. I did see where Curtis mentioned XP and I took that as a hint that he suggest XP.

I've never had the reason to try a "virtual" machine, so I can't comment on how it would work.

Blair,

I asked my computer tech guru and he says it is just a little complicated at first but it is a viable system. You lose some performance but if you have a fast computer it shouldn't be an issue. You only lose performance when running inside the Virtual Machine.I watched a video on Virtualbox and it looked good to me. There is also a second method that my tech does not recommend called Dual Boot. I think Dual Boot is where you have two different hard drives for each operating system but as I understand it you can expect some issues booting from one OS to the other.

I use it on my Mac, both Boot-Camp and Parallels but I've never had to install a full version of Windows. I've never had a need to run a Windows version on Windows. Not sure how well the emulation replicates a true Windows environment.

I'm considering doing an image recovery for my Windows 7 PC. Does anyone feel that this is a possible solution for my issue? I do have an image several weeks before the issue occurred but I have never done an image recovery although I do backup both data and image and I did make the recovery CD via Windows 7 Backup and Restore. Although it seems simple and quick; I'm skeptical.

Thanks,

Bill

I should get you back to before the problem occurred. If it works, I would probably change system settings not to install any more Microsoft updates. I might try and "freeze" your system at that point if the restore works ( I don't see why it shouldn't).

Without the ability to acquire and install any of the SP's and Updates for your version of Inventor, this may be your only way to keep IV2009 running.
