Assembly Configurations

Has anyone had any luck figuring out a way to get around the 'assembly configurations' limitation of IV.
Im talking about creating a configuration of an assy and then being able to document it by making idw's and then BOM's of the saved config that only show the parts in the config.

This is a tricky one.

Haven't heard of anyone being able to do this yet. This is the biggest drawback of IV for me. I do fixture and gage design. Most of which have multiple setups to do multiple different parts....not having the ability to use configurations is very tough for me.

Hope AD can get us something that will do so effectively.

Constrain you changeover components to an ipart. This worked well for me for a set of fixtures I just finished. -- Byron Newton

I'm not sure that will for me, at least on the fixtures I'm on now.

They require the same component in different positions...can what your talking about do that, and if so...how.

Yes, This is what I done. I made the ipart like the parts I was fixturing with only the geometry needed to constrain the parts. Place the ipart in the assembly and constrain the components that need to move for the changeover. I made sub-assemblies of each changeover and constrained them to the ipart. Doing this and using design views I was able to show each part change-over. -- Byron Newton

would you be able to send me a data set, showing this....I'm intrigued...but can't really follow your method....I think I may need to see and dissect it to really understand.

Using iPart is not a a right way to do it. It is so twisted. Don't make sense. Specially considering BOM issues.
there is no good way to do it like solidworks does, of cause, somehow we still can have the job done as always.

I have a little experience with solidworks and have been learning/using IV for about a month.

I would have to say the only big drawback I've encountered so far is the lack of something similar to configurations in SW.
They are very easy to use and allow a lot of flexibility.

Configurations for parts and assenblies would be at the top of my wish list.

Just my $0.02 worth!

One of our clients is fussy when it comes to part manuals, they want certain groupings of parts different from the natural assembly heirachy.
I guess we will have to deal with tedious, manually configured, non updating presentation views for the mean time unitl something is done.
This could take a long time... : \

Hello Carl-

The way we work around this problem is to create a presentation file of the alternate "configurations". Parts can be toggled on and off and translated/rotated in the presentation file without affecting your model. It is then possible to create a view on your drawing of the presentation. However, this does not solve the problem of needing to create a BOM for each configuration. Configurations have been on the top of our wish list since version 2.
